I did this when I was a kid. At first I started small with a crystal radio and hand wound coils. I graduated to kits and built everything from shortwave radios and computers.
It’s easier now that we have breadboards and integrated circuits. The trick is to build something useful that keeps your interest when the project is finished. You might even use it as a building block for bigger projects.
My grandmother was afraid to come into my room because the door was automatic, the radio had a remote control, and there were many exposed connections. That was in the early ‘60s. There are even more exciting projects today. Go to the library and look at books descriping electronics hobbies, there are many.
The best thing is to make it your career. I have been doing this for 50 years and never worked a day in my life, it is sometimes hard, but always interesting.
