“Great Question” (1points)

(apologies if this is a double up but for some reason my question didn’t post)

It is 3 am and I have been up for over an hour with really painful gas.

I have attempted some yoga positions which I came across after googling the topic and they have helped a little.

I am also sipping on pepperment tea as I have read that this helps.

I am still feeling discomfort after several farts. I have tried pooing but have been unable to do so.

Is there anything I can do?

Get on on all fours, stick your bottom in the air and push your stomach down towards the floor.

Lying on your stomach with arms above your head can also help.

A side question: I ate a large bag of Dutch liqourice this evening/afternoon. Is this the likely contributor?

I would like to avoid this experience in future.

A cup of coffee always greases my gears…

Were your licorice candies sugar-free? I saw a lot on the internet about them causing gas and GI upset.

@Rachienz Eating a large bag of anything is not a wise move and probably has everything to do with why your intestines are angry at you. Continue to do the yoga poses especially knees to chest and happy baby while rocking side to side to help relieve your discomfort.

Try pigeon on your left leg in front and lean out over your left leg to help stimulate your colon.

lay on your stomach…it helps get the gas out.

GasX works really well for me. Can you try an all-night pharmacy?

Georgia_Printco's avatar

@Cupcake Really? i read that about diet soda, but I just figured it was the carbonation part…. i know chewing gum can contribute too…. something about swallowing air in your saliva… weird, huh.

Cupcake's avatar

@Georgia_Printco I think it has more to do with the sugar substitute.

Tried and true for gas: lay on your back and do 50 knees to your chest excercises with your hands. no gas in the world can stay in the human body with this manuever.

Rock back and forth from the waist while sitting. If nothing else, it moves the gas into a less painful place, thought it often helps expel it as well.

Loudly.

You’re in NZ or Australia, aren’t you? Why don’t you go ask the sheep? :-)

(Maybe a laugh will help you – I know it’s an uncomfortable condition.)

By drinking several cups of hot water and rubbing my stomach counter-clockwise.

~Just make sure you have no open flame in the room!

I figured if a laugh could help…

If you decide to have open flames, make sure you film it. It could make for laughs later. As a matter of fact there was a segment on a TV program dedicated to people lighting their gas, and a young lady won by emitting such a fount of gas that it actually ignited her drapes! It was amazing!

If you can get some ”Oval” tablets from the pharmacy. They contain simethicone, an anti-foaming agent that decreases the surface tension of gas bubbles, causing them to combine into larger bubbles in the stomach that can be passed more easily by burping.

Simethicone does not reduce or prevent the formation of gas in the digestive tract, rather, it increases the rate at which it exits the body.

However, simethicone can relieve pain caused by gas in the intestines by decreasing foaming which then allows for passing of flatus.

If you take beano before a meal it helps.

LOL, thanks for all of your help everyone. Finally let out a ripper in the end and slept peacefully from then on out.

@janbb – the sheep were of no assistance. They offered me a blanket though, quite a thoughtful sheepie.

I’m sure I read somewhere that licorice is a laxative!
