What is something in your wardrobe that you really should get rid of but can't?

Something that no longer fits or something you’ve had years & is out of fashion.Whatever the reason you refuse to give it up It’s there & it stays. At least for now.A body in there must be excluded from consideration. I mean, think of the smell.

Homecoming/Prom/bridesmaids dresses.
I wear tshirts and jeans constantly, so they are really just misfits in my closet.
But I like them, so they are staying there. Even if they are all the way in the back and don’t get looked at.

My skinny ties of the 60s(remember the Beatles ties) and leisure suits. i have a closet full of both. i guess i am still waiting for the trend to return to wear those skinny ties again. i think i will be dead before that happens. and the leisure suits of the 70s? i do not think that Goodwill will accept them. i have so many and they are sooooo out of style. maybe, i will just find a homeless camp and give them away there.

Why throw something out because of another person’s concept of fashion? I still have clothes that I owned in the seventies, they still fit and I’ll keep them until they fall apart. A lot of them have come back into vogue. Admittedly most are blue jeans or shirts and jackets. Good Tweed jackets don’t change much in style.

@DarkScribe You go rock that jacket! Woo!

The oldest thing I have is my wedding dress. I had it cleaned about 3 years ago & had it wrapped in acid-free tissue paper & sealed up. It’s on the top shelf of my closet. I’m hoping some day my granddaughters may want to wear it, I don’t know. But I’ll sure never get rid of it.

I have a vintage heavy silk dress that has tone on tone hand sewn beading on the front. It was a special order in the 1950’s, made in Singapore, probably for some wealthy housewife. Apparently, she and I are built exactly the same (at least before I gained weight). It looks like something out of “Mad Men” and it’s gorgeous. It’s so out of character for me, but I just can’t get rid of it.

2nd Answer: i have one closet completely designated for my old 45s and cassette tapes of the 50s, 60s and 70s. back when the music was much better than today. i have brand new original 45s that are worth a fortune. i will not move them. matter of fact, some are so valuable i had thought about keeping them in a vault. i would never throw these records away. my wife complains, a little. but not much. she also knows the fortune that hides behind that door and she is willing not to complain. after all, these records may pay for our next trip to Jamaica.

@syz Oh, I wouldn’t get rid of that either. Sounds beautiful. What color?

syz's avatar

It’s an unusual coppery beige, almost a skin tone, but prettier. I don’t know how else to describe it.

My blue jean jacket from high school and a leather bomber jacket from the 80’s.

Hoodies, my wardrobe contains entirely too many hoodies. I am waaayyy too old to be wearing hoodies, but there is nothing better for freezing mid-western day.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@SuperMouse Bite your tongue!!! I have a lot of hoodies, too. I LOVE them. Why would you think you’re too old for them???

faye's avatar

I will ignore it if there is an age limit- love my hoodies, too, and gather in my daughters’ if she’s bored with them. My daughter’s want to give away some of my stuff- no, no, no.

YARNLADY's avatar

I have so many t-shirts I have had to put half of them in the hall closet, because I ran out of room in my chest of drawers. I can’t bear to part with them. I also have some of the collectibles hanging in my family room.

rangerr's avatar

@SuperMouse I have 29 hoodies… You’re not too old for them. They are fantastic for everyone.

If What Not To Wear is correct, just about everything in my closet needs to go.

But then I would be naked.

My Dallas Cowboys (Emit Smith) shirt…. it’s massively to big & far to flash for me to ever wear again.
