I was primarily studying ecology, but I took several wildlife biology courses as well. They were great classes to take, and very informative. I’d highly recommend them to anyone interested in natural sciences.
The level of experience you can get at college really depends on how hard you’re willing to work, and how much time you want to spend. For instance, I joined an ecology club at school, which allowed me to travel around quite a bit, and both plan and work on some ecological projects. It also lead me to many ecological conferences where I made some contacts in the private, academic, and government sectors (which eventually helped me land a job after I graduated). I took a lot of outside time and commitment, but the experiences I gained from it really paid off in the end.
You can do the same sort of thing for wildlife biology at your school. Find some clubs or wildlife bio laboratories at your college, and join up. If you have no luck there, you could even join up with the national Wildlife Conservation Society, and see if they have some local events in your area. The skies the limit, the amount of experience you can gain is really up to how much you are willing to do. Best of luck!
