I need to purchase a new UPS and I'm hoping someone can steer me in the right direction?

My UPS has finally kicked the bucket and I started to research different ones. My question is a two parter. I don’t really suffer from power surges or power outages however as I research someone mentioned about downsurges, and how some UPS don’t handle that.

One, is it necessary to protect my computer from a downsurge?

Two is and UPS really necessary to protect my computer or do I just need a good surge protector since I don’t live in an area of power outages?

Yes, it is a good product to have. I have lost a mobo to a power hit, from lightening. Very unpredictable. Stick with APC. Good brand name means you can always get support and replacement batteries.

I happen to like Belkin. Just don’t skimp. Get a good one, rated for your needs. It may save your data one day, as well as protect your hardware investment.

@Pandora I’m with @UScitizen get APC.
I have been using them for almost twenty years, get the best. Your comment about downsurge / brown-out is important. Several areas can have reduced voltage during high demand.

brownouts kill more computers than lightning strikes and total outages. Get a good one.

I also like APC, it’s what we use for all of our equipment. I purchased a CyberPower UPS 1500VA model since it had free shipping at the time (which costs $20–30). I have it connected to a Samsung HDTV, Mac Mini, and monster storage DROBO. I was surprised at how many brownouts (every other week or so) my apartment endured. You’d never notice it since it happens so quick, but @patg7590 is right, don’t let this small investment ruin your day.
