It’s most likely due to the AB migration that happened a few months ago. A bunch of new users came over who were not maxed out on lurve for any jellies. Activity on the site went way up, and so did lurve.

@IBERnineD LOL! Well, actually, what it means is YOU have a life! I’m seriously thinking of changing my user name because Val123 is sooooo boring! And, since I’ve started working (first week was last week, off this week ‘cause of Spring Break) I imagine it’ll take my new account a loooong time to get anywhere.

The AB migration brought in a lot of established friends who were high-fiving one another freely with their virgin lurve, and so newcomers who already had a long buddy list soared immediately. Most of us arrived solo and had to make our way gradually. You did in four months what took me a year and a half, even though I’ve been here every day since I joined.

But you also had to be a great contributor and impress a lot of the older members, or you couldn’t have risen so quickly. So it really is a combination of things. Not every former ABer has done what you have.

You’re all just naturally good like that. Be proud. =)

@Jeruba Well, the ABers come from a place of appreciation. If you notice on Augustlan’s question about welcoming the new members, she almost got 40 GQ’s. Everyone who joined in on that thread had big points whether they were ABers or not. So it’s not like we’re all running around pointing only our friends. A lot of us point regardless of where you came from and we point for decent answers, not nonsense just because someone is our friend.

I agree with @jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities that because of the influx of new members, there was more lurve to distribute and more activity on the site.
But all of you original Fluthereites had lurve to give as well so you are partially responsible for why so many are now hitting 10k whether someone is from AB or not.
Don’t make it sound like we only point our friends. When we first all joined, we didn’t understand the rules or guidelines or how much lurve we could give out to each person, so all of those threads (like Augustlan’s) had big points. We soon adjusted and understood after that.

I saw somebody write not too long ago that they miss when lurve and hitting 10k actually meant something. I laughed my ass off. How unhappy do you have to be for other’s achievements in order to say something like that? It still means something regardless of how many members are on a site. People are bitter because users are passing them up who have spent less time here. I happen to know that the 3 ABers who have already hit 10k, spend all day on this website, not excluding the fact that they are all amazing contributors and very well-liked.
It’s pompous to be bitter over that.
Besides, all of these points are virtual. They’re fake. People who take them too seriously and get upset over how much they have need to grow up and have their diaper changed.

@Val123 I know you’re not. I was responding to the comments about the AB migration. The fact that you aren’t from AB and hit 10k fast proves that everyone is responsible for it. Not just the former ABers with their lurve giving etiquette.
Oh yeah, and the fact that you’re funny and smart as shit probably has something to do with it as well. :)

@Vunessuh LOL! You know what, guys…I just found out earlier this week from JOE that there is a life-time max of 100 points that you can give any one user. I did not know that! Like I said, I’ll be changing my account soon and I’ll keep it in mind. I will HORDE my lurve like a crazed miser!

I don’t think it was ABers. For one thing, there aren’t all that many of them, and they all top out at 100 lurve for all their friends just like the rest of us. Second of all, I got a big bump when they all arrived, so it is clear to me they weren’t just handing out lurve amongst themselves. Love you ABers! Mwah!

Things tend to slow down around 7 or 8k because you are topped out on so many people. After that, you have to get newer people to appreciate you. It’s just harder to get more lurve after that. But I’ve noticed something that I find very peculiar. When I write a question, my answers to other questions seem to get more lurve. Why would that be? So sometimes, when I’m feeling particularly unlurved, I’ll write a question to see if things pick up. Often, they do. Weird. Has anyone else noticed this?

EDIT: In my previous post, I didn’t mean for it to sound like the ex-AB users were only lurving each other. Lurve was flying every which way, and pretty much all users got a bump in lurve as a result.

You can only get a certain number from each quip. Say if a quip gets 20 GA’s only five of those will actually increase your score*. Same with GQ’s. Looks at poor janets. 155 GQ’s and only 74 points.

*I’m not sure of the exact number. But I remember it being pretty low.

I never paid attention to how the points add up. I guess I still don’t know anything about it. I just give lurve when I feel it. If I think a question is good, I give it a click. If I like an answer I lurve it.
I came here solo, found an answer to a google question about tomatoes.
I’m kind of a loner on here I think, sort of a wallflower, but that’s OK, I’m shy.

The economy has changed. There are a lot more active, newer users, which has as much to do with continued growth as it does with migrations.

@andrew ; you mean the economy has changed as in, there are more unemployed people with time to hang out on fluther?

@Judi Or maybe the Fed’s loose monetary policy has led to Lurve inflation?

There have been a lot of new members since the links to Facebook and Tumblr, and the widget was created. The whole point of these links and widgets is to bring more traffic to the site, and more traffic generates more lurve, not to mention more revenue to the owners, through increased advertising value.
