Are there any superheroes who aren't white?

#7 Spider-Man 2099: In 1992, Marvel created 2099, a line of comics about superheroes 100 years in the future. The future version of Spider-Man was geneticist Miguel O’Hara. The 2099 universe was short-lived in its popularity, but Miguel was probably one of the first Latino characters to be featured so prominently. Writer Peter David was a few years ahead of his time in actually noticing that there were people of color around.

Araña: Araña is a teenager in Brooklyn who discovers she has Spider-like powers and joins the mystical Spider Society to battle the would-be world-conquering Sisterhood of the Wasp. Sounds corny, but it’s very well executed, and just a good, fun read. Unlike some of the other characters on this list, Araña’s ethnicity is neither invisible nor rooted in stereotypes. She speaks Spanglish, struggles to balance her studies and social life with her battles against the evil Wasps, and has an interesting relationship with her Dad–a journalist who seems to have a lot of integrity (although he’s s a bit overprotective at times). Clearly a take-off on Spider-Man (who guest-starred in an early issue), Araña had the same entertaining contrast of high school blues and superhero battles as Ultimate Spider-Man or the early days of the classic 60s Spider-Man. Unfortunately, the series didn’t last long, but maybe she’ll make a comeback.

I bet your kids don’t even know what “race” or “diversity” means. I know I didn’t when I was into superheros…I think discrimination is something that is learned and they’ll turn out fine even if all their superheros are white if you set good examples.

I can’t believe that no one mentioned Marvel’s Black Panther, Black Colossus, the “new” Captian Marvel, or the Falcon or DC’s Black Lightning, all African Americans.

Also, DC’s Blackhawk team had Chop-Chop, an Asian martial arts expert.
DC’s Legion of Superheroes had Karate Kid, who kind of started out as Caucasian but sort of morphed into being an Asian. Marvel also had an Asian martial arts hero, Chang Chi and the Ancient One, an Asian supreme sorcerer who mentored Doctor Strange.

And then of course there are non-human (but humanoid) characters, such as DC’s Legion of Superheroes Braniac 5 (a good guy, not a bad guy) who was as green as the Hulk, and Shadow Lass, who was kind of a dusky shade of blue, and Marvel’s Adam Warlock who was gold colored..

I could probably go on if I put my thinking cap on, but that’s all I have time for right now.

So, with all these answers how come nobody else named them? Am I really getting that old that these characters have dropped out of the collective conscience? Or, oh my! am I still a comics geek after all these years?
