Well, there is a woodpecker pecking the tree outside my window, and it had me thinking, do their beaks go dull?

He is pecking to keep it sharp.

They have a piece of cartilage in their heads which acts as a shock absorber.They also have a barbed tongue which kinda helps.Their beaks are self sharpening.A wondrous little fella our Woody.

This reminds me of a joke my grandmother tried to tell me, but I’m not going to repeat here because I’ll get yelled at.

And I agree with @ucme ; they are self-sharpening. Or never go dull in the first place.

Totally not an answer, but a funny story anyway:

There was a (not too bright) woodpecker that would peck at my metal bedroom window-frame every morning, right about 6:30. I never needed an alarm clock to get ready for school. ^_^
We moved to another house, and a (homeschooled) friend of mine ended up with my bedroom when his family rented the house from my parents. Not one week after moving in, he comes up to me in church and says “What the heck is up with that idiotic woodpecker?”
