The pledge of allegiance to the flag at a Nascar race?

Yes it’s true.
Totally used to the prayers and the National Anthem sung at the beginning of the races, and the Planes flying over, but the last one i watched, the announcer next said, “Now place your hand over your heart, and recite the Pledge of Allegiance”,
which everyone did and said, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States…” etc etc
...,isn’t this a bit extreme, or do you think this is proper for this type of event?

I never really understand the performance of the pledge of allegiance unless you’re a civil servant or a public employee, or serving in the armed forces. I get the listening to national anthems (usually of both teams attending the competition), but perhaps that’s because I’m used to more multi-national things.

The whole thing gives me the heebie jeebies that small children are asked to do this every morning at school. It seems a bit too much like indoctrination.

I don’t read to much into it. NASCAR is and always will be associated with the south, and southerners tend to display their patriotism more readily. (not saying that northerners aren’t patriotic) We say it at different sporting events in OKC.

What’s the difference if you stand to sing the national Anthem or you stand to pledge your allegiance.

I’ve always wondered: what would happen if someone didn’t stand up. What exactly are you pledging your allegiance to (please don’t tell me the flag and the nation for which it stands). The pledge has always felt pretty militant to me. So it’s great for soldiers and small children, apparently.

I have never had a problem not standing for the pledge or the anthem…

I’ll stand out of respect for a national anthem of any country, but I’m not going to recite an oath of allegiance to a country I don’t belong to.

The rednecks are still bitter over the civil war. Let them feel united in thier brotherhood. It won’t last much longer.
