Where to find an old bathtub/horse trough for cheap?

I want to do a photoshoot with a bathtub prop out in the woods but I want an old antique looking tub. Since now days antique tubs cost a pretty penny and I’m on a college student budget, I thought maybe I could find a metal horse trough or something that would give the same “old & rustic” look. I have no idea where to find such a thing and looking online hasn’t really helped me. I guess people don’t use large metal horse troughs anymore and now use plastic ones or feeders. Any ideas on how to find a big metal tub for cheap that will be fairly easy to find and transport to the woods?

Craigslist

Try craigslist, or go driving in a rural area and ask some people who look like they might be junkers if they have a tub they could give you.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard Pretty much hit it on the head. You might even try calling a junkyard or an equestrian center/farm and see if they can direct you to somewhere near you. I know we have a few old troughs that I’d be more than glad you let you take away, so you just have to ask around.

I would give you the one out of my old house, but the 1800 miles one way trip probably makes that not an option.

If you were here I would suggest the local garbage dump – every time I take a load of rubbish out to the local one there are dozens of old bath and laundry tubs.

Transporting an old cast iron tub would not easy – they are big and heavy. You would need a pick-up truck or a trailer.

Wow, thanks you guys! I found a bunch of tubs (no troughs) on craigslist for like $100. I think I might still try the dump tomorrow though. If that doesn’t work, I might try to talk the few people I found of craigslist down to $50. Now I’m just worried about how big its going to be & getting it to the location. Do you think one of those antique tubs would fit in a Honda Element? :/

One will fit, the problem is will your suspension handle the weight. You might want to rent a small flatbed trailer to haul it with.

Trailer rent is cheaper than new shocks or springs.
