We had this huge mutt of a dog when I was a kid. She was about the size of a great dane. One day she was chewing on something and when I tried to take it from her, she clamped down on my arm. Didn’t break the skin, but left impressions in my skin that could be seen for an hour or so. I ran around the neighborhood trying to show them off before they faded. My parents gave me the “you know better” talk.
I’ve been bitten a few times by parrots, hamsters, and gerbils.
My kids have better animal injury stories than I do. My son was bitten by a garter snake when he was two. It wrapped itself around his leg and latched on. We had to pry its mouth open, and the whole time my kid just stared at it. Once we got the snake detached, blood started dribbling down my son’s leg. He didn’t even cry. The pediatrician got a good laugh out of it.
Last summer our daughter was swimming at the beach and got stung several times by a jelly fish. She just started screaming bloody murder and made a crazy run back to shore. She was beside herself from the pain, crying and yelling until the lifeguard ran over with his spray bottle of vinegar. She was stung in six places, but the vinegar helped very quickly. I love that kid because only ten minutes later, she was back in the water. I think I’d never go near the ocean again.
