How much has pond scum evolved?
One of Google’s quotes of the day was; “For four-fifths of our history, our planet was populated by pond scum.”—J. W. Schopf.
That’s rather interesting, and humbling. Pond scum has been around for some 4 billion years, and it’s still going strong. That would make it a very successful life form. But how much like the pond scum of 4 billion years ago are today’s varieties? What can we learn from our earliest relatives about how to adapt to changing conditions on Earth?
