“Great Question” (2points)

I have a degree in Business but I love making short videos, especially experimental videos. In the near future I’d like to direct and produce films but I don’t know if joining film school is a good idea and if they will accept someone who doesn’t have a filmmaking degree. I’d also like to know if I should either go to an American or European film school, I have a closer attachment to European films.

If you love it, then go to school. Your portfolio is your pass to get in. Go to the school where you feel most comfortable, European or American. I’m sure they all deal with all kinds of sensibilities.

Film school (or any graduate school) is good because it gets you connections and really helps you break into the biz.

Based on what you say about being into experimental videos, you could start off in porn and work your way up the ladder. I can’t tell your sex, but it will be less difficult if you are female. If you are going to Europe it may be best to stay away from Germany as their porn is usually the most alternative.

Go for what you love to do.

As I see it, film school is for people to get reasonably good jobs in the film industry. A born filmmaker can use what they already know about films, combined with their own unique ideas, tastes and ambitions, to create films without wasting years and thousands of dollars on a degree. If you think you’re the film genius type, fuck school, and dive headlong into your craft, throwing caution to the wind. If you’re a more cautious, less confident type, who just enjoys movies and thinks a career in the field might be fun, you’re probably best off going to school.

American or European? Well… choose what you think the better experience will be for you. Going to school on either continent will not define the style of your work, merely the influences and opportunities and challenges you will come across. The best bet is just to pick whichever one feels right, and never question it. A bad choice is infinitely better than no choice.

One of my friends was a biochemistry major and was preparing to go to med school when he suddenly decided he wanted to study film. He took a chance and applied to USC, and he was accepted. I think that was an extremely happy moment for him.

You should try it.

I agree, follow your dream. But…

It is not the business it use to be. It is harder then ever to make a buck in it.
Not matter what discipline you wish to follow.

You could use your business degree to make real money. Then take that money to follow your passion, on your terms.
