Abnormal bleeding after intercourse, is this normal?

I had sex a week or so ago, and then I started spotting/bleeding dark brown blood everyday. My period is not due yet. I am nervous if it could be something bad, but I don’t know what to expect. I am seeing the gyno tomorrow to be safe, but I just wanted to see if anyone experienced this before.

Was it your first time?

Actually anything abnormal would not be normal, and anything involving the loss of blood means Doctor time. We don’t have all that much blood you know.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir No it wasn’t my first time, but he was very large… I don’t know if that plays a part? I am kind of nervous if I have possibly caught an STD too.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Kokoro From him being large you could have had a few tears but not bleeding over the next few days or so. Did you use a condom?

Kokoro's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir No. :( I don’t know what I was thinking not using one. I am on birth control but I know that doesn’t protect at all.

are you in any pain? being on hormone contraceptives can cause spotting esp if you havent been on them all that long or if you have missed a pill at all.
The more you worry the more your periods are likely to be irregular/light/heavy whatever.
STIs can also cause spotting so it might be an idea to get youself checked. obviously you would have caught that quickly if you only had sex last week so a short course of antibiotics may be in order, its nothing to worry about

@Kokoro Maybe you got pregnant and had a miscarriage though I’m thinking (gut reponse) that’s not what it is.

Kokoro's avatar

@bongo Not pain, but inside I feel sort of irritation… nothing too annoying though. When we were having sex it was a bit painful due to his size so maybe it irritated?

@Simone_De_Beauvoir Whoa, that is possible?

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Kokoro Well the timing seems a bit off…but pregnancy is always possible…

have you been on hormones for long? it is very common in the first 6 or so months i think. I had some spotting after sleeping with a new larger guy a few years back. I used protection however was on the pill too. I didnt get an STI (although do get checked out!!!!) but the doctor put it down to me being under stress at the time and one of those things as it didnt come back again until i changed hormones. I changed over to the implant and have had some spotting since i changed and the doctor said that is normal, changing over contraceptives.
abnormal bleeding can be a sign of chlamydia though.

@bongo I have been on bc for a long time, for a few years. Yeah I am worried I have an STI… :((( Trying not to freak out.

How long have you been on birth control and which one are you on? Some birth control methods due have bleeding in between periods as a side effect so it could be hormonal. Are you bleeding very heavily (like more than your normal period)? If you are bleeding heavier than your normal period you definitely need to be seen (so it’s good you have an appointment). If you find that you are bleeding really heavy (like needing to change a pad or tampon very frequently (like every 30 minutes or so), you need to go to the ER.

Was this the first time you had sex with this guy? If you caught a STI from him that time you had sex, it’s very unlikely that you would have immediately started having signs of it.

As far as possible pregnancy and miscarriage that someone else mentioned, it is possible to get pregnant on birth control (as none of it is 100% effective). It wouldn’t have been a pregnancy and miscarriage from that sexual encounter though, it would had to have been from one before that.

@seaofclouds I have been since I was 18 I think, I am now 21. I use orth tri cyclen lo right now, but have used different ones through out. I’m not bleeding too heavily, I usually use 2 or 3 pantyliners a day. This was not the first time, the first time we used protection.

Seaofclouds's avatar

Most likely it’s breakthrough bleeding. Be prepared for your GYN to do a full pelvic (and if they don’t insist on it). I hope they give you some answers at your appointment tomorrow.

@Kokoro dont freak out. that will disrupt ure periods more. i know that is way easier to say than do!
if it is an STI worse that will happen here will be a course of antibiotics.
and if its because of your birth control they may ask you to stop taking it for a while to see how your body copes without it.
taking antibiotics will also affect hormones but if you are prescribed these your doctor will tell you about that.
I expect that it is nothing to worry about but do go see your gyn asap and get this sorted. the longer you leave it the longer you worry putting ure body under more stress.

When I had sex for the first time I never bled, which I thought was unusual. Then the 2nd person I had sex with, I did bleed, which was I thought was strange. But because it wasn’t my first time he was a lot rougher and he was also bigger, I don’t know if that could be the case.

I have bleeding during/after sex sometimes and I think it’s because my vaginal canal (I’m not sure of the correct anatomy term) is smaller than most womens.

Lightlyseared's avatar

I would get it checked out by the doc. Could be nothing but it could indicate something more serious.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

I definitely agree… see your doctor, there are far too many things that could cause this kind of spotting. Most are harmless, but still good to be sure it isn’t an infection.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

I’ve never heard of an STI that caused instant bleeding after intercourse…I would guess that it’s either because he was too large and he tore you, or because you’re having breakthrough bleeding/spotting. Both are normal. Still, see a doctor to be sure.

@bongo is right that birth control can cause spotting. If the guy had a large penis he might have also bumped your cervix.
