My husband is a good gluer of things, with a smorgasbord of adhesive substances at his disposal. He has told me more than once in this situation that if he glues the broken plate or dish, it will be good for looks only. Over time the glue will give out with the heat of washing and stress of use.

I wasn’t sure I believed him, so I decided to put this to the test once with a favorite plate. It broke cleanly in two, and he fitted it and stuck it as smoothly as possible. The crack was invisible, and the plate slid right back in with the rest of our dishes.

About a year later, It fell apart in my hands during dishwashing. I was lucky it hadn’t done that while loaded up with hot food.

There are new adhesive products in the market today that will bond porcelain together (as used in dental labs) However, the cost of such adhesive may very well be more than the price of a new plate. Unless, the porcelain plate is part of a collection of fine china that has some intrinsic value, you may be best suited to use clear epoxy or Elmer’s E1012 China and Glass Cement at a cost of under $5. As @Jeruba had mentioned, mended plate is best left minimally used once adhesive has been set.

I would recommend a clear 2 part epoxy. When cured it has the strongest bond of all the adhesives and is non toxic when cured. Most 2 part epoxies can take the heat and moisture of repeated washing the plate may endure.
