Does dry shampoo really work?

“Great Question” (2points)

I’ve been seeing a lot of reviews online for dry shampoo. It comes in a can, and you basically spray it in your hair. I guess this is for the people that don’t wash their hair everyday or something?
Do any of you have any experience with this?
I’ve got a friend that lives on a farm now with her new husband, and I thought maybe this might be a nice idea to send her a bottle or two. :P (You know, its the small luxuries in life, yadda yadda yadda)

I’ve used it on patients who were in ITU (and so were intubated and loads of lines so you can’t wash their hair any other way). It works but it is a poor substitute for proper shampoo and conditioner.

All it really does is soak up the hairs natural oils/ grease and make it look and smell clean. If your running late for work it can come in handy, but the feel of your hair is not nice and soft like it is after using a real shampoo.

If you have dark hair it also makes it look like you have grey roots. Its basically talc powder in a spray can. I dont like it really as i have dark hair however my friend who is kinda dirty blonde likes it however it takes the shine off your hair a bit too. definately not a long term solution altough good at the odd festival.

@bongo My friend has red hair. She does a lot of yard work, and its really hot where we live. I thought it might be a nice thing to use every now and again or something. This also sounds like something that would be nice to put in your gym bag, too. I never would have thought something like this existed lol

Yeah im sure she will appreciate it, it is exactly like using talc tho, I rarely bother with dry sampoo, talc is cheaper and more easily available and has more uses. If you put a little on ure brush and brush it through ure roots you will get the same effect as the dry shampoo. I am sure she will appreciate it mind but tell her if she really likes it and cant get hold of it all the time – my little tip with the talc works just as well i think.

@bongo What is talc?

I tried it once. Made my hair sticky…I will always opt for a good shampooing each and every day.

@MissA Agreed. I don’t understand how people can shower and not wash their hair. It makes me feel weird. But my friend is living really far out in the country right now, and they’re lacking hot water. So she doesn’t get to have awesome hot showers, not to mention shes working outside and feeling really gross because of the humidity here. I think the dry shampoo might be something nice for her to try. Its worth a shot! :P

@bongo Ohhhh. I’ll be sure to look around for that. Thanks!

Very very useful if you are hospitalized or bed-ridden and are desperate. I used it when I was stuck in a hospital bed for six days. But it is a desperate measure only and no substitute for hot water and soap.

I liked best the shower cap with the shampoo inside. You put the cap over your hair, massage it for a while and then remove and dry with a towel.

I am not a believer in spritzing talcum powder around. (Women with ovarian cancer often have clumps of talcum attached to their ovaries.)

I’ll sometimes use camping shampoo, similar concept. It’s not as good as soap-and-water, but if you’re pressed for time, it’s great.

@meagan – It’s actually beneficial to not wash your hair every day, as it helps some of your scalp’s natural oils coat the hair and prevent it from drying. When you don’t wash your hair, you’re allowing these oils the time to penetrate and become absorbed by the hair making it soft and shiny.

Now, if someone has very oily hair, they probably have to wash it daily or it looks gross. I can’t go more than 2 days, my hair is too fine and it looks dirty. My mom can go a week, but her hair is a lot coarser than mine. I will say that my hair is very, very soft and shiny, with little maintenance.

I find talc, (baby powder) works better as well and is much cheaper. I sprinkle it on my hair, towel it in, and brush it out. This is for camping or emergencies, tho, but it looks okay.

Its funny we have a product like this for dogs at my work. Its a “hair cologne”, it gives the appearance and smell of fresh cleaned hair. I assume this works similarly, but like everyone else said not a permanent substitute for regular shampoo. However sounds like a good idea for your friend or those days were hair washing just isn’t in the schedule. Also works for those who only wash every other day, which is actually how you should do it washing everyday is not good for your hair. It strips to many of your hairs natural oils.

According to most reviews that I’ve read for dry shampoos, baby powder works just as well. I wash my hair every day, but I will use baby powder for touch ups when my scalp gets a little oily at the end of the day. Although it’s not as good as a full shampoo, it works pretty well.
