So how exactly do you like your pancakes?

And erm, no I don’t mean those kind of pancakes. I’m referring to the food type.

Curiously, it seems pancakes inspire quite a bit of OCD tendencies in many people.

There’s a right way and a wrong way to eat them. Then there’s the must haves (toppings, accompanying beverage, fillings). Oh and lest we forget, most important of all: the specs on your favorite type (size, thickness) and how you achieve that perfectly cooked pancake.

So have at it… school us on your pancake preferences.

Either Plain, with Blueberries, Banana, or Chocolate Chips. Lightly browned on both sides. Not too thin, but not terribly thick. Butter on top. Syrup on the side for dipping. (I usually eat them with my hands too. Classy, huh?) Oh, and a glass of OJ, please.

I only eat banana pancakes while listening to Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson and reflecting on its harmless innuendo for irresponsible sexual activity.

And butter and syrup and chocolate milk.

@chels ~ I eat mine with my hands too!

here’s mine: gotta have maple syrup… in a small bowl for dipping. I like to cook mine with real butter, and make them about 5” across, cooking them til golden and with crispy edges. As with most other food, I like a tall glass of water to go along with them.

I prefer buttermilk, fresh blueberries, or my fave recipe which I learned in ME: granny smith apple pancakes.

Crispy on the edges, fluffy on the inside. Loads of butter, melted onto every tiny piece. Sprinkled with sugar or with syrup, a little at a time (I hate when they get soaked with syrup).

The other way I love to eat them sounds kind of gross but is so delicious! My husband makes this terrific sausage gravy, pancakes and eggs (over-easy). I butter the pancakes, pour on some syrup, then cut up everything and mix it all together. Yummmm.

My perfect pancake is an English pancake (which is much thinner than an American one, but not quite as thin as a crepe), topped with nothing but lemon juice and a little sugar.

With salted butter – warmed 15 seconds in the microwave.
Syrup on the top and drizzled on the plate. Cup of coffee.

In the usual way, with butter melting on each one in the stack, and maple syrup (or what passes for that when ‘maple’ isn’t available) ... and with bacon on the side and a pretty girl across the table smiling at me.

Without the bacon? without the girl? it’s just breakfast. With those, Nirvana.

Don’t care about the pancakes, but it has got to be real maple syrup. I even carry my own bottle for eating out rather than eat the fake stuff they have on the tables.

Buckwheat pancakes slathered with butter and swimming in our own maple syrup. A few strips of crisp bacon and a large Bloody Mary. Yum!!

I’ll eat anything between instant pancake mix and almost completely cooked as long as I have my own personal container of syrup.

The best pancakes come with an ocean view…the days newspaper, Bloody Mary with a hot coffee chaser. I don’t like the humongous pancakes, light and fluffy…tad bit of butter and real maple syrup and a couple strips of thick bacon fried crisp. Nora Jones cd for background music rounds up the meal.

I had a pancake up in Woodstock once, I can’t remember the name of the restaurant, but it was a blueberry pancake, bigger than my head, yet light and fluffy. Had it with butter, real maple syrup, a rasher of bacon on the side and a big glass of milk.

I’m a sucker for banana pancakes. A minimal amount of syrup, some butter. Not terribly large. Mango juice with cubes of nata de coco in it. Mmm.

I like them the way they used to make them at Royal Canadian Pancake House in Manhattan (RIP). Large, fluffy, and pretty much anything you wanted in them. I liked the white chocolate almond ones, with real maple syrup. Oh, yeah!

Buttermilk pancakes. Fluffy and thick, but not heavy. I don’t mind if they’re on the light side, but you better not overcook them. Lots of real butter, and just enough real maple syrup.

I achieve this by going to my favourite breakfast restaurant. Of all the things in this world that I am straight-up awesome about cooking, I suck at pancakes.

I’ll take a coffee and a glass of milk on the side, no bacon or sausage – I’m not big on meat in the morning – and adorable little boy to share with me. ^_^

Me too! I don’t like them very thick and I like them a golden yellow. A small amount of maple syrup, most in the middle spreading out until there is none around the edges.

light and fluffy, chocolate chipped, served with warm (or even cold) syrup, whipped cream (if i’m lucky… this one is rare) and sliced bananas and strawberries. and of courseeee chocolate milk and oj on the side! yummm. bacon & sausage never hurts either!!

I like them big, thick and fluffy with butter and syrup on them. Sometimes I’ll put fruit on them – my favorite on pancakes is fresh strawberries. Typically, I just eat them plain though.

either plain or with GOOD blueberries and not too thick and “doughy”. they have to be done just right. a shit ton of butter and then a load of syrup. and i can only have one on my plate at a time.

Mmm, I’ll take some blueberries in mine please! I prefer a bunch of smaller sized cakes over a large plate sized one. Also, ideally I prefer butter and real maple syrup, though something like Log Cabin is fine if that’s all that’s available.

Now if I’m backpacking in the Cascades during late summer, and I can have fresh picked Mountain Huckleberries in them, I am certainly in heaven!!!

I like any kind of pancakes, but I usually have plain because that way I can put blueberry syrup or boysenberry syrup or some other kind of weird syrup. (I like maple syrup too).

Absolutely no butter on them. That’s gross. I’ve never liked that. But neither does my dad. My mom’s pretty much the only one who likes that.

I don’t care about the size, but when my dad would make them, he would always make a variety of sizes including ones that were a centimeter in diameter just for fun. :P

cooked rare with a bit of butter. Powdered sugar if the mood strikes.

Just for the record I had thought that this question was about Fluther pancakes and had an answer all ready. I am not sad but now I am hungry ;)

First, one’s likes and dislikes don’t equate to OCD. I like small pancakes, well done, with warm pure maple syrup.

This is a great question! I try lots of different toppings, but I’ve got to have buttermilk pancakes. They can be cooked almost any way (fluffy, flat, slightly undercooked) but shouldn’t be overcooked for sure. Some of my favorite toppings are yogurt (vanilla, strawberry, Stonyfield Farm’s Banilla), peanut butter, peanut butter AND vanilla yogurt, peanut butter and bananas, butter and cinnamon-sugar, half & half (just pour it all over, sorry health).

When I was a kid, my mom was awesome at making pancakes into any shape, it was a classic birthday breakfast. Pancakes in a ‘V’, dinosaur pancakes, boat pancakes? Yes please.

Thin, not cooked all the way; just until both sides have little holes and they are a slight hint of brown. I like them small. I roll them up and eat them like taquitos, with no fruit or syrup or extra added things. Plain. With orange juice.
I know I’m boring.

@Tink1113 ~ you should try (I know this is going to sound gross…) toasting fresh cinnamon raisin bagels to a light brown and dunking them in orange juice. So good.

It’s sacrilege I know, but I’m more of a waffle and French toast person. That’s why the pancake in Woodstock sticks out in my memory. I have been the victim of many, many, many pancakes that could’ve been official pucks used in the NHL, and thus, my impression of pancakes aren’t very good.

Does anyone have a recipe that guarantees me light, fluffy pancakes that I might enjoy?

@aprilsimnel 2 C SR flour, 1 tsp baking powder, ¼ tsp salt, ¼ C sugar, 2 Tbsp canola or peanut oil (in the batter), skim milk (enough to make batter thick but pourable), 1 egg. My recipe for 30 years. Same for waffles but a little thicker batter.

I want my pancakes containing the fluffy pockets of air that naturally form in them. Most people smash the pancakes down with a spatula out of boredom or something while it’s cooking… but that ruins the pancake.

And I’ll take mine plain, with boysenberry or maple to dip it in, and no utensils… my hands work fine for it.

@aprilsimnel I’ll take great French Toast over pancakes, any damn day. This diner near me makes the best! Thick, diagonal-sliced Italian bread, a hint of vanilla in the batter, crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. Tons of butter and sprinkled with a load of powdered sugar. So freaking good!

I like my pancakes made with water (no milk, gross) and with a tan! No brown pancakes for me.
Also, I love nutella on top. YUM!
