What does it mean when there are 2 arrows over a ship in spore?

I was observing a species I helped evolve, and there are ships going back and forth between different colonies, and when they stop 2 arrows pointing in opposite directions apper. What are they doing?

I want to say they’re trading/transporting spice. It’s been a while since I’ve played, however.
