Whenever I get a new cat I usually wait quite a while before deciding upon a name.
I just want some time to observe it and hopefully be able to come up with something unique to that particular cats looks or personality. Every one is different.
Sometimes it’s based on looks. I had one Callie whose face was the craziest jigsaw puzzle mishmash I had ever seen.
Weirdface wasn’t quite right even tho it described the situation perfectly. It just sounded a bit perjorative. But eventually the fit was perfect with Funny Face. Plus it had a really nice song to go along with it. And she was a funny Callie clown as many of them turn out to be.
My other Callie was very very small in size and was Polydactyl with an extra toe (like a thumb) on each front paw which made her look like she had mittens on. So she became Kitten Mitten and retained her kittenish behavior and size all through her life.
My other kitty was really different. She was quite reserved and dignified and had the softest gray fur I had ever felt on a cat. I had just finished moving and there were a lot of empty liquor boxes/moving boxes strewn all over. As I was holding her petting that lovely fur, my eye caught sight of a box that said Black Velvet. I have no idea what that liquor tastes like, but I just dropped the black and Velvet she became. She was such a dignified cat, so that simple name suited her perfectly.
So, my best suggestion would be to not rush the process. Mull over potential names in your mind until the right one for her particular personality or looks comes to fit. You’ll know it because it will just seem like the most appropriate for her and fits her like a glove.
You’ll find yourself calling her that with ever increasing frequency and you’ll be comfy with it. Don’t feel you have to come up with it in any particular time frame. After all, you’ll be calling her this for the next (hopefully) 20 yrs. or so :)
