At LibriVox, volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain into digital audio (eg. mp3), and then make the audio files available to the world, for free (through our catalog, a podcast, and bittorrents)

Our objective is to make all books in the public domain available, for free, in audio format on the internet.

Also, check your public library. I know several which offer audio books via the web.

Gutenberg. But it’s all public domain. There’s also a place called librivox which my girlfriend sometimes uses (she’s blind.) The problem there is that not all the readers are very talented.

I just read an article in the recent PCWorld where they were recommending outstanding websites.

A quick summary of their evaluation.

Offers a massive library free…from classics to sci-fi to fairly recent fiction..while the site itself is hideous, the selection is immense…you can download a book as a zipped set of MP 3 files or subscribe to its chapters on an iTunes RSS feed.

In addition to the free, they sell a wide assortment of premium books starting as low as $7

(Im not quite sure whether the “hideous” refers to aesthetics of design or navigation) but it aroused my interest.

This is in the June edition of the mag and the article lists 52 “incredibly useful sites” and from the others on the list I’ve checked, I would assume that this reco is of as high a quality as the rest.
