Tonight I saw a bird gliding above me. I only saw it from underneath, but I think it was an owl or possibly a hawk. It had a white stripe under each wing. Any idea what type of bird it was?

There are several birds that fit that discription. Get a bird book from the Audobon society, or check one out at the library.

You did not supply enough information so here’s a guess: Broad winged hawk.
That will give you a place to start.

Possibly a Northern Harrier?

A night hawk. Fun to watch soar around snapping up bugs late in the evening!

@Cruiser: Thanks! I’m pretty sure that’s the one I saw!

I agree! I too, saw three mysterious birds with the same description. They were migrating as I later discovered. They were night hawks! I was so exited to see them. And if you want a guide I suggest a PETERSON FIELD GUIDE TO BIRDS! It helped me a lot!
Even though Im new to this website, I am not new to birding! :)
