Necessary to upgrade JAVA?
I jusr got an automatic message on Mac OS10 suggesting that I upgrade JAVA. I don't know what this means or whether it is important. I use computer for email, word processing and webstuff only. GIven that I have dial-up, download takes almost 5 hrs (81 MB.) I can do it at night. Will it replace earlier JAVA or will it take up more memory? So confusing. I'll get DSL this spring. Would that speed things up?

It's definitely unnecessary... this last upgrade, if I recall, fixed the daylight savings time (that the US just changed). Regardless, you are probably never using java... and I'm sure the version you have will be fine. That being said, I generally recommend staying up to date on all of Apple's automatic updates... It won't slow anything down or take up much more space (replaced on your harddrive, so likely undetectable differences in storage... this won't affect your RAM (fast, temporary memory) at all.) But Java truly won't make any difference to you. Don't update if it's a big pain.
Thanks as usual, Ben. I upgrade the programs I use and skip the others (movie, music, photo-related and mysterious and uncomprehensible) How can I learn some of this on my own w/o bothering you guys? Is there a Dummies book?
