What are some eternal pieces of wisdom you found on Fluther?

“Great Question” (7points)

What are some really good quotes, bits of advice, or pearls of wisdom that you’ve found from fellow Flutherites?

I was just thinking of this today because a while back I was reading through some relationship questions and I came across a (in my mind) very succinct and thought-provoking model of a relationship. I don’t remember what user said this (if you know, please tell me!) but the idea is:

In a relationship, say, with Persons A and B, there are actually six people in the relationship:

1) Who Person A thinks he is;
2) Who Person B thinks A is;
3) Who Person A actually is (which may be unknown for both parties).

So three ‘people’ per actual physical person in a relationship. If you think about it, this is really where all relationship problems are derived from…this and differing expectations out of a relationship.

So what about you? Is there anything you read on Fluther that you’ll remember forever?

There is so much information to be gleaned around here and people have so much to say about any and every thing that its hard to say what I’ll retain or remember forever.

“As I grow older, I pay less attention to what men say. I just watch what they do.”—Andrew Carnegie

This came from @HasntBeen who hasn’t been around here lately. I believe it’s the only Fluther quite I recorded in my quotes list.

“In short, the ego is not a trustworthy steward of the truth or effective agent for balancing competing concerns. But the ego is what we do our believing with—and that accounts for the intensity with which people press their beliefs and the severity with which those beliefs alter reality for the subject.”

One that I ponder from time to time was a statement to the effect of “it is (nearly) impossible for people to act contrary to their beliefs.”

Makes you realize how important belief is in the grand scheme of things.

And I didn’t even notice the response above until just now. Interesting.

I picked up this quote from Sarcasm‘s profile page:

“We should try to be the parents of our future rather than the offspring of our past.” – Miguel de Unamuno

That’s a keeper. I know there are many others, but I can’t think of them at the moment.

I don’t have a particular quote but Fluther discussions have exposed me to new facts and concepts, i.e., race has been discredited as an outmoded idea since the mapping of the human genome. I have also gained in understanding and greater tolerance for all kinds of diverse behaviors and emotions. In short, I have learned how much there always is to learn, even when you think you know it all!

My favorite is…

“Thank you for your effort; it’s because of people like you that Fluther is one of the best places to have thoughtful discussions and learn new things.”

Yes. Zen wrote something along the lines of, “anger gets you in trouble but pride keeps you there.” I really take it to heart.

I also love anything that Petethepothead has on his profile page. Ah, Pete. :)

Harp. Anything written by Harp was a beautiful learning opportunity.

@augustlan Harp was great. I really miss him!

@janbb Me, too. I chatted with him recently, and he’s doing very well! He’s incredibly busy, though.
