PayDay….Fourth grade. The candy store (before “health issues” became an issue) was in the fourth grade classroom. The students who behaved in class were allowed to sell the candy. They cost 5–10 cents a bar. So for some reason, all my candy memories are of fourth grade or going to the fourth grade classroom to buy candy. All the candies were set on a table in boxes with the lids usually pushed up with a pop-out display. After recess (the only time the candy was sold) they were immediately boxed up and stored in a metal case in the classroom.
Boston Baked Beans were also sold there. They weren’t from Boston and they weren’t beans. They were reddish candy coated peanuts.
Sugar Babies were small hard-shelled caramel-like bean-shaped thingys.
I also remember some sweet liquid that came in these pop bottle shaped wax containers that were about four inches in length…you would bite of the top and drink the liquid that was pure sugar, really. (Anyone remember those?) Oh, and at Halloween, those orange wax harmonicas that you couldn’t eat…but you chewed. Red Hots. Candy necklaces.Dubble Bubble Gum.
Um…yumm…..I think. I don’t know how our teachers coped with all that sugar in our bodies…or our parents!
