Ladies, do immature jokesters (fellas) get old after awhile?

“Great Question” (3points)

I have an older friend who’s husband I’d label as an immature jokster (everything has to be “funny”. Really, it’s annoying and most times not funny).

I like funny; don’t get me wrong, but, c’mon! Grow up, boys.

Yeah, they get pretty stale after a while!

chyna's avatar

Yes, my ex-husband was like that. It was cute/funny at first, but then it got really old. On one most memorable occasion he “talked” through the dog to an insurance agent that we had invited to look over some insurance issues.

wundayatta's avatar

Is this a poll question? I mean, is anyone going to say no?

wilma's avatar

@chyna That made me laugh.

Jude's avatar

@wundayatta Possibly.

I’m sure there are people on here who have those types of individuals in their lives and they’re okay with it.

bob_'s avatar

Well, they don’t get old if they get shot, I guess.

Hell hath no fury…

Jude's avatar

Ah, forget that I asked. I just hate that shit.

Seaofclouds's avatar

I’m okay with those people when I don’t see them often (like friends that I only see once every few months or so). I would get tired of it if it were someone I saw on a regulat basis.

chyna's avatar

@wilma Yeah, it’s kinda funny now. Oh, heck, it is not. It was embarrasing then and still is!

DarlingRhadamanthus's avatar

@Chyna….Your answer made me laugh…and I thought, “Hmm…you know who can play Chyna’s ex-husband in a movie? Stever Carrell!” I thought of his character in “The Office” and how he would probably “talk through a dog”, too! Thanks for making me laugh.

I know some “jokesters”. What I see are grown little boys who never quite felt comfortable in their skins, for whatever reason. Their way of deflecting their insecurity was to “keep ‘em laughing.” Sometimes, the insecure boys were able to figure out that if they could make people laugh, they could also get attention. What I’ve seen though, is that they have a sort of immortality——they live a long time, you know? I’ve known more “jokesters” still going well into their 80’s. Maybe all the lack of self-intropection is healthy after all. LOL!

But tiring for the spectators, or the people who live with them, I’m sure.

chyna's avatar

@DarlingRhadamanthus I can see that! Steve Carrell would be perfect.

ratboy's avatar

I don’t understand the question. We age normally just like everyone else.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

They’re never even new, to me.

Jude's avatar

@ratboy But, you’re funny and clever. :)

Likeradar's avatar

I hate that shit. Not everything in life is funny or needs to be. Not every statement needs an LOL or a smiley face. I find people who are constantly joking to be completely exhausting and seem to be lacking depth.

but then again, I’ve been accused of having no sense of humor.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Likeradar Yeah, that’s because they’ve got no other defense line.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

Psst…, most of us guys aren’t immune. We can’t stand them either.

wilma's avatar

It isn’t just men, I have a sister-in-law who is like that. She needs to be the center of attention and tries to make a joke about everything. I think the “stupid jokes for attention” might be more a male thing though. Women seem to use drama more often.

chyna's avatar

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities You’re going to make someone a great husband someday.

Aster's avatar

I know a man like that. The real bad part about him, besides your getting sick of him fast, is he can’t sympathize. He wants to look at the world and his life as one big party. Ha Ha all the time. So when his wife’s father died he said, “it’s too depressing around here; I’m going out.” There’s a superficiality to it and I imagine his wife feels abandoned sometimes. A person should be reasonably cheerful but be able and willing to be serious and apply TLC.

Likeradar's avatar

@Aster Ugh, that’s pretty awful. That guy must be really emotionally crippled to be handling life like that. I feel kind of bad for him.

chyna's avatar

@Likeradar I feel worse for his poor wife.

Likeradar's avatar

@chyna I was going to write that too, but I assume she knew she was with an emotionally unavailable dude before marrying him

Facade's avatar

Yes. My SO loves to joke around, especially when it’s not called for. We’ve had many tifs about it. I think people should act their age, which includes having wisdom about appropriate behaviors.

Aster's avatar

The guy appears to have achieved his dreams, though. He is Very successful (commercial real estate) agent , a vice president, and lives in a sort of ritzy area of Dallas. He definitely has a charming aspect to him, he’s cute and Very fit. Lots of friends, travels a lot. Not to feel sorry for.
But he seems immature.

wundayatta's avatar

Doesn’t everyone get old after a while?

If they’re lucky, I mean.

Just sayin’.

BoBo1946's avatar

How did Burger King get Diary Queen Pregnant?
He forgot to wrap his whopper.

Oh shit, they don’t like jokes!

wundayatta's avatar

See what I mean?

(About getting old)

BoBo1946's avatar

yah yah yah…. hate to know i was that stuffy and stiff!

wundayatta's avatar

Well you know, perfection is not for everyone! ;-)

BoBo1946's avatar

check this one out!

A baby was born who was so advanced, he could talk. He looked around the delivery room and saw the doctor.
“Are you my doctor” he asked?
“Yes, I am”, said the doctor.
The baby said, “Thank you for taking such good care of me during the birth”.
He looked at his mother and asked, “Are you my mother”?
“Yes, I am”, said the mother.
“Thank you for taking such good care of me before I was born”, he said.
He then looked at his father and asked, “Are you my father”?
“Yes, I am”, his father answered.
The baby motioned him closer, then poked him repeatedly on the forehead with his index finger. “Hurts doesn’t it?”

BoBo1946's avatar

There is a time and place for everything. Mature people know when to joke and when not too!

My joke was to prove a point. Just being facetious!

liminal's avatar

Is anybody surprised by how this turned out?

BoBo1946's avatar

@liminal at this point in my life, i’m never surprised!

Jude's avatar

I know of a few, and they’re just not funny. It never stops. Irritating is what they are.

But, hey, that’s just me (and how I feel).

BoBo1946's avatar

@jjmah depends on the person. Some can, some can’t…when it is really irratating, is when the person think they are funny and they are not. In the real World, i almost never tell a joke…I’m NOT funny! The old adage, everyone thinks you are fool and open mouth and remove all doubt! So, in mixed company, i’m not the life of the party. I prefer one on one conversations!

Jude's avatar

(I like you Bobo. You’re good natured, crack a few funnies, but, it’s not always all about the funny with you :)).

I’m not picking fights, just stating how I feel.

Aster's avatar

boo !! I liked that one!

BoBo1946's avatar

oh, totally agree! I’m a 63 year old man, been down every road 8 or 10 times. I certainly know when to keep my “trap” shut in the real world. I enjoy reading jokes, not telling them, but i get some good laughs reading them and my motive posting them here is allow others to have a good laugh. There is way too much seriousness in this crazy world. Lots of doctors say, laughing is great therapy! If you have the opportunity to visit an assisted care facility, the one common denominator for all those REALLY old people, as most are between 80 and 100, is they laugh a lot. Today, visited my mom, and was sitting at a table watching my mom put a puzzle together, she is 87, and a lady was helping mother, she was 98 and the two them, were just laughing “up a storm!” Loll… funny thing, we did have a storm here today!

Anyway, got to run..

Aster's avatar

@Boo Laughing up a storm in a nursing home? New one on me! Happy for you, though, and for them. Gotta run! not really

BoBo1946's avatar

@Aster not a nursing home, but an assisted care facility. These ladies and men are still mobile, good minds, etc. Most have problems with short term memory. That is mother’s problem. She can remember anything 40 years ago, but cannot remember if she took her meds this morning.

BoBo1946's avatar

btw, they can leave the facility anytime they please. Some refer too it as a retirement home! They get a balanced diet, have a physical therapist that comes a couple times a week, they have a button by their bed to call the nurse if they have problems. Someone washes their clothes, does their hair and nails, give them their medicine, etc. Really a great place for people that are old, but still active. Oh, they take trips together, play cards, exercise together, etc…cool place!

a very short while

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Yes! Argh… especially when every subject must be turned into a sexual innuendo and you’re left not able to laugh or anything, just want to not be there.

Likeradar's avatar

@Neizvestnaya That’s what she said.~

YARNLADY's avatar

Never. My Father In Law, who passed away at the age of 88 tried to turn every discussion or comment into a Henny Youngman joke, a comedian he admired from his youth.

Ludy's avatar

if i could say that something bothers me about my fiancee is that, besides trying to be funny he doesn’t know when to stop even when i am telling him ” Ulises, I am serious” he thinks I am being funny too :S

Aster's avatar

@Neizvestnaya That is how my dad was. I grew up with that crap and it kept me from feeling close to him. Maybe he was insecure about being 5’9? Because he mentioned it sometimes. He had no concern about making me uncomfortable.
He mostly left me alone until after mother died . Then it was like a lifetime of wrath was inflicted upon me. As if he had been laying in wait to get me back for… I don’t know what. Of course, I got the upper hand in the End.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

@Aster- I like to believe I’ll be alive to enjoy positively so many more years than any where I had to endure other people’s crap. I can say now at 40+ that I’ve suceeded and I just want more of the good stuff :) That’s my upper hand, glad you got yours.

Sarcasm's avatar

“immature jokesters” has such a negative connotation. Of course you’re going to get almost unanimous agreement that they get old.

That’s like asking “Hey, do you hate getting stabbed by needles?” as opposed to “Do you find shots to be an acceptable form of vaccination?”
In the former, of course you’re going to get lots of “yes”. Because of the verb stabbed. Being stabbed is unhappy.

Sorry, I’m not a lady (I’m not entirely sure why that’s an important factor), but yes, people who can’t get serious (male or female) get on my nerves.

“Fluther”?

I barely knew ‘er!

I’m just going through a rough week @Grisaille. Hangin’ by a by thread.

What with you seeking advice on what to do when you are asked to give more than you have?

I can tell, Miss. Grasp that thread tightly.
