I’m not able to duplicate the problem. Can you give me a few more details? What version of Gimp are you using? Can you save other jpgs as xcf files? Can you save that jpg as some other filetype? Does the error show up as you save it or when you try to open it again? Have you tried using the Save a Copy menu command? (and probably a silly question, but…) Are you choosing the xcf filetype or relying on Gimp to figure it out by the extension?

I’m far from being a Gimp guru, but maybe we can narrow it down so someone who is will say, “Oh, it’s this!”

Version 2.6.8 – I haven’t actually tried to convert anything else to .xcf before today, so I have no idea if this has been a problem all along. As of right now, nothing I’ve tried to convert from .jpg to .xcf today has worked – I tried making some scribble files to test it out… but no go. The problem comes up if I try to open the file again. It isn’t showing up as an image file type at all – and if I try to open it manually – it just shows an icon of a little ripped piece of paper. I am typing it in as .xcf, not relying on Gimp to figure it out. Tried it as “Save As” and “Save As Copy” – neither worked.

I am able to save it as .png, .gif, etc – just not .xcf. I actually just went through and saved all of my layers manually as individual files because I was starting to worry.

Same version I have. So, you’re typing in the .xcf AND choosing xcf in the bottom “file type” dropdown?

Yep… I can’t figure it out. I’m stumped.

Have you tried a) saving another file type to xcf, and b) saving a brand new document as xcf?

If you can’t do either of those, my next suggestion is to reinstall Gimp. I can’t think of why Gimp wouldn’t save to its native file type. I found lots of problems where people can’t save as anything OTHER than xcf, but nothing like what you’re experiencing.

One more possibility, and I don’t know if this is even a valid suggestion, but have you tried a different color space, like RGB? I’m grasping at straws, here.
