Who's your favorite Victorian-era madman?

“Great Question” (3points)

Friedrich Nietzsche?

Richard Dadd?

Robert Walser?

Which of the period’s beyond-the-pale eccentrics (male or female) do you most admire?

And would you have wished sanity on him or her?

William Chester Minor is one of my favorites and I have a sneaking suspicion that he might just be your kind of Victorian-era madman too, Jeruba. :-) Edit: And no, I wouldn’t wish insanity on anyone. I have seen it in the flesh, in someone I love very much, I have stared it in the face, I have seen how it terrorizes and destroys of person’s soul; how it destroys everything they are and could have been, and no, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Weird…Friedrich & I almost share a birthday (off by 2 days). Richard & I share the same name. Robert & I share a name & occupation. I root for all three!

I would never wish sanity on anyone. Just like I would never want someone to wish it upon me.

Here’s a few more for the list:

Aleister Crowley

Helena Blavatsky

Alexander Scriabin

Scriabin’s madness was also musical genius. Blavatsky and Crowley merely amusing.

Not what you’re after I know but Jack the Ripper holds an enduring fascination. Yeah I kind of do wish the guy was sane, might have helped a bit.

I second the Ripper..Well atleast I heard of him . I also know of Poe. It’s a toss up.

@stranger_in_a_strange_land wasn’t Mr Crowley more Edwardian?

Anybody with a Twainian/ Nietzschian sized moustache, a heavy dose of Syphilis and a disquieting countenance.
