I’m making a scrapbook for my first year of university. I go back to school in a week, plus the week is very busy, so it’s going to be a very basic scrapbook.

So, people of fluther who have made scrapbooks in the past, I ask you:

Do you have any tips for me? Do’s/Don’ts of the trade?
I already have the book/pictures/paper/some stickers, what else do I need?
About how much money should this run me?
What did you make your scrapbooks about?

I would suggest not spending too much money and just be creative with what you have. Scrapbook materials can be expensive and most of the fancy decorations sold in shops can be made by you with some creativity and patience. I like having glue, a printer, scissors, and nice pens. You can also use several scrap-booking online sites to get some ideas if you feel uninspired.

I would suggest that you include little tokens of the year..like receipts for your books or your out of date college ID. And let the objects and photos do the talking, use stickers and other decorations sparingly. I don’t like overly worked, sticker happy scrapbooks, but that’s just me!

I make lots of scrapbooks and I agree don’t go overboard on scrapbook materials from stores! I used all of the post-it’s , birthday cards and pics I had up in my room from college as my decorations along with some nice pens.

I recently just threw a bridal shower for a friend of mine and everyone scrapbooked one page and we made her a scrapbook to take home, it might be a fun back to college night thing to do, just tell everyone to print a bunch of pics and its super fun to do as a group.

Thanks guys! :]

@mtirado Yes, that’s actually one of our plans! We did it last year for one friend’s birthday gift, and it turned out very well! :]

I don’t know where you are but if there is a 99cent store, they have some great scrapbook products. They have scrapbook pages that look like a footbal field or park and inside a classrom. Also music charts. You can add them to your scrapbook as new pages or paste them over existing pages. They add a lot of color to your book. They also have 3D stickers like a dog but it is not flat, if you don’t mind some “fullness” to your pages. They also have matting for frames, you can paste these on pages to box in different topics and add color to the mat to make a photo stand out more. Alphabet stickers and animals, Disney, all kinds. You would check in toys, hair ribbons, by picture frames in school supplies by the books and the seasonal aisle.Have fun and don’t be afraid to add a leaf or napkin, you can always chhange it if you don’t like it. If you go to Target or TJ Maxx always check in “closeouts” or “final sale” items first

I always scrapbooked when I was working on an exhibit—my ‘such-and-such exhibit book’. Police keep ‘murder books’ same idea. Not pretty but a looseleaf in which to keep photos, significant correspondence, news clippings, invitations, bar coasters, lists and databases, handwritten notes, maps, sketches, small flat souvenirs etc, and easy to add to. Be inclusive now. Make it pretty later if you want to.

keep everything that strikes your fancy and you aren’t putting anywhere else. sort it out later. When I re-read my exhibit books, not only do I remember the final product or exhibit, but the people I met along the way and the odd [and not so odd] things I learned along the way.

Ah, thank you everyone!

I have finished the scrapbook and can’t wait to show my friends at school on Saturday! =] Thank you for all the advice and your own stories! I think it really helped me to decide things along the way. (:
