I loved my boss of many years. Wise, charming, and personable, and he treated his staff like a family. We had a crab feast at his home once a year and his wife made rum cakes for some of our in-house gatherings. He protected, defended, trusted, and praised his staff, and we would do anything for him. When he retired he was replaced by his second-in-command. I respected her, but did not feel as comfortable with her, and she put me [and probably others] on a tighter leash, but she too protected her staff in times of cutbacks by reaching farther afield to get us projects to work on.
When she left, she was replaced by a hatchet-man and he had me in his sights. End of story.
