According to this, two sick horses in Colorado in 1889 were sold for $85. So, for a used horse that needed work I guess the market price was around $40—$45.

This may sound odd, but it looks like two horses, harness’ and a wagon cost $350 from Colorado to Iowa. Or the same odd news item shows up in different papers.

And…. in Iowa, a six year old brown horse named “Pete” was sold for $100.

I wonder what the Porsche horse luxury sport models went for. lol

In upstate New York in 1866 (a little beforehand, I know), $200 was considered a very good price (for the seller) for a two-year-old Morgan. Or maybe it was two such horses. I haven’t read Farmer Boy in a long, long time.

I could read old newspapers all day long, just for the ads.

I agree! Did you know that that Beyer used to make a heroin elixer for teething pain?

I think it was literally called Beyer Heroin drops for infants! lolol

There were a lot of major addicts back in the day before they knew any different.

Cocaine, heroin, opium, laudnum….lots of drugged children and adults! lol

@Coloma I didn’t know about baby drops, but I knew about the cough suppressant. It didn’t take too long for people to realize heroin was habit forming.
