What did your mom throw out of yours and you could just scream?

I hear “my mother threw out my baseball cards” once in a while. Did you have something your parent tossed out years ago without warning you first that you’d love to have back?

Our home videos! AUGH! It was an honest mistake… but we tease her anyway. It was a good ten years of my life out with the garbage.

A gallon zip lock baggie full of Native American pottery shards I found as a kid (our school baseball field seemed to have been built over an Indian mound). And about 150 sharks teeth that I had collected, including massive fossilized teeth 2–3 inches long (my dad worked at a phosphate mine).

She didn’t throw them out, but she gave my Lionel train set to Goodwill. It only took up about 5 sheets of plywood in the basement.

When I was a teen my mom threw out my PS1 for ‘heated’ family argument that ended up in fight. I didn’t play any games anymore till my dad buy me a PS2.

@muppetish Home videos? How heartbreaking !

My favorite pair of shoes. While I can’t wear them now, it’s still heart wrenching to know that she threw them out. While they were practically worn to shreds, they still fit and I loved them. :) ♥

My old collection of my little pony’s. Even though I haven’t seen them in years. I had over 200 of them all packed nicely. I was saving them for so long. :(

@gypsywench I would have been heartbroken! I still have my pony collection in a trunk at the foot of my bed. I amassed quite a big collection.

Conversely, when my mum was a little girl, her parents sold off her entire Barbie collection. She had tons of dolls, sets, and accessories, but they needed the money. Image how much it would be worth now? Crazy stuff, man.

@muppetish Oh no! Check this out. Luckly my mother kept all my brothers star wars toys. He still has the all of them.

my “come on baby light my fire shirt.” it was burgundy. and the jose feliciano song at the time was hot. i equate the two as childhood memory.

@gypsywench My mother attempted to rebuild a collection when I was in primary school. She subscribed to Barbie Bazaar and attended conventions to track down her favourite Scooter and Francine dolls. Unfortunately, she had to sell those as well. This time for our family. She has not tried collecting since. One day, when I have money, I’ll buy her the doll of her dreams and leave it under the Christmas tree for her :)

I imagine your brothers kept their action figures in tip-top shape then? My brothers’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and super hero toys did not fair so well. We still find limbs in the closet every now and then.

I think the only time I was upset with my mom throwing something of mine out was when I was really young. I had all of the original care bears and one day she decided I was out growing them and she got rid of them. I would have liked to keep them at that point.

The other day my mom was cleaning out the basement and found a set of great speakers with a subwoofer, a great netgear router and a modem. When I got home I saw them sitting in the recycling bin. Luckily the recycling guy left them there because you have to recycle those in a special way.

We also have some plumbing issues right now so we’re clearing the shed because it’s above some pipes. There’s so much childhood stuff I want to keep.

My cello, she said that I didn’t practice enough (I had just put four hours in on getting a piece down for a recital) and that it was a waste of money to pay for my lessons. She then threw my cello out the window. We are still not on good terms, as she now pours money out for my two younger brothers for piano lessons for many years now, and they are still nowhere near the level I was at with the cello, and they only dedicate maybe 40 minutes a day to the piano while I always put in at least two hours of practice on my cello. Go figure.

My original Nintendo. I was soo mad when that went “missing”. It wasn’t my mother that did it, so she’s not the culprit. I’ve been waiting to buy one off of Amazon, but I miss my old one.

Aster's avatar

@Winters Out the window?? Why didn’t you go outside and pick it up? Or you did and just didn’t mention it.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Comic books. For several years I would collect hundreds, keep them sheathed, ordered and boxed but she wanted to clear out garage rafter space one year and poof, they were gone.

@Aster upon impact with the concrete ground, it pretty much shattered with a couple big pieces here and there. I guess thats the problem with really old cellos, they have such amazing pitch, but they’re so fragile as well.

Aster's avatar

@Winters omg! It sounds like she was having a really bad day!
