What literary term am I thinking of?

“Great Question” (2points)

I recall reading an article about a certain literary term used to describe a specific type of female protagonist or secondary character.

The type of female character mentioned is usually quirky, close to nature or the earth, and very often the object of a young-ish male character’s lusts or affections.

I vaguely remember this archetype being referred to as a “pixie something or other” but google doesn’t turn up any results.

I’m not looking for Mary Sue, or Femme Fatale, either. Those are incorrect.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard More like I spend way too much time reading TV Tropes… but I’m always glad to help!

@muppetish, well now you can say that all of your time spent reading that site has been useful in at least one tangible way. Thanks again!

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard I’ve used the website as a source for papers before. Turns out, my Shakespeare professor reads it (as she noted in the margins.) You’re most welcome!

I may have to try that now.. using the site for sources, I mean

The Manic Pixie Dream Girl

is exemplified by Kirsten Dunst in “Elizabethtown” and Natalie Portman in “Garden State”
They’re the types of characters that should make you run like hell, but you end up loving them.

@marymaryquitecontrary, yep, that’s it.

Welcome to Fluther, by the way.

Interesting. That describes a woman I know by the name of Twig the Fairy. She works at Renaissance Festivals.

@Pied_Pfeffer, holy cow… she’s beautiful/awesome! I want to meet her!

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

She is beautiful and charming, and I’d be happy to make an introduction.

Yes, but she is imaginary, just as all manic pixie dream girls are.

Well, yes, Twig is, but her real life alter ego, Kathy, is pretty cool.
