Social Question

Are there any clothing styles or articles of clothing that you avoid because you don't want to be (mis)identified as a particular type of person?

This is a really interesting question. I avoid super-tight jeans with too many accessories, and leather pants/shirts, because, and I hate to admit it, I think they look too “gay.”

Overalls

Cowboy hats/boots, t-shirts with writing (other than band logos), Uggs, flip flops, hoodies.

I don’t avoid clothing because I don’t want to (mis)identified. I avoid particular articles of clothing because I do not like them and/or find them uncomfortable.

Anything I don’t buy lol. I don’t shop at Abercrombie, that goth store, that hip hop store, that tuxedo store etc etc. I don’t know what my style is, but I know what I don’t want it to be.

syz's avatar

No, I don’t think so. I just wear what I want.

Anything with writing or brand logos.

Though it’s impossible to avoid on athletic shoes and athletic wear in general. The jerseys and shirts I have for cycling and running have little logos.

delirium's avatar

No shirts with writing on the chest. Funny science visual puns are fine if paired with a cute skirt.
No sport things.
No crocs nor uggs.
No writing on the ass.
No American flag-wear.
No logos unless they’re über obscure.
No leggings as pants.
No obvious thongs.

The vast majority of young women’s styles, like “goth” or “emo” or “video vixen” I wouldn’t wear anyway. I don’t wear logos, save of rock bands I like and that alligator on my tops.

I also don’t dress, however, in styles that are geared towards women who are my chronological age. None of that Dress Barn/Jones New York/Donna Karan stuff. Those clothes look too old for me, as any of you who are my FB pals can attest.

DominicX's avatar

I would never wear emo/goth clothing, but only because I just find that look unattractive in general. It’s not like I want to wear it, but fear of being labeled in the group prevents me from doing so, I just would never do it in a million years because the look is unappealing to me. Same goes for things like sweat pants and overalls.

The other day I wore a backwards hat and a tank top. I looked brotacular. Although that’s not really my “scene”, I wore it because I liked the way it looked.

Blackberry's avatar

Ditto on the logo shirts. I especially hate those damn graphic tees with the angel wings that the muscular guys always wear at the jersey shore.

Blackberry's avatar

@DominicX Lol @ Brotacular…...although I didn’t think people still wore hats backwards…

wundayatta's avatar

I don’t wear suits (unless I can’t avoid it) because I don’t want to look like a lawyer. I don’t wear button down shirts, either.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

I avoid wearing white shirts with black pants so I’m not mistaken for a Mormon missionary.

iamthemob's avatar

@wundayatta

And what’s wrong with lawyers? ;-)

marinelife's avatar

I don’t wear ankle bracelets.

boffin's avatar

After this last weekend I’ve stopped wearing “meat”. . .

Seek's avatar

@boffin I’m telling you, one person has to go and muck it up for the rest of us.

ucme's avatar

Oh…..my…..god….. I wouldn’t be seen dead in ripped fishnets coupled with a skirt riding so far up my crack it feels like it’s welded on. If you think i’m wearing love & hate tattoos on my knuckles well, no way pedro….I mean Jose. Reason? I wouldn’t want to look like a tart now would I? Not on your nellie, I jolly well think not!! :¬)

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Where I live (USA) then people of all social classes, ethnicities and income levels generally dress like slobs in public. I try not to dress like a slob.

Lightlyseared's avatar

T-shirts or hoodies by Superdry. Mainly because every body is wearing the stuff and who wants to look like everyone else.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

I never thought about it. I buy what I like. I know that I will never wear anything that has teddy bears or wolves on it.

delirium's avatar

Oh! NO ANIME SHIRTS.

Lightlyseared's avatar

I’d never wear a black suit unless i was going to a funeral (because it make you look like you’re going to a funeral).

wundayatta's avatar

@iamthemob Nothing wrong with lawyers. Hell, I married one. Just don’t want to look like one. :)

Cruiser's avatar

I avoid Pink Tu-Tu’s especially when at the grocery.

Ltryptophan's avatar

I didn’t wear red for about 8 years due to certain unavoidable affiliations.

Seek's avatar

@Cruiser I bet a nice pink tutu would look absolutely fetching on you.

Cruiser's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr As a matter of fact they are! A bit itchy on hot summer days though! XD

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

Fishnets outside the house
T-shirts with words on them – ESPECIALLY bands (I’m gonna pay $25 bucks to advertise your band? Get real).
Overalls
Uggs
Crocks
Anything that makes it look like I enjoy sports or the outdoors.

So…. what @delirium said.

downtide's avatar

I don’t wear sports clothes because I’m neither an athlete nor a chav.

Sarcasm's avatar

I have to avoid wearing kilts because I don’t want people to think I have haggis recipes for them.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Apparently, I used to suffer from AOS. I had a one-piece stretchy thing in the shape of bib overalls in turquoise that flared at the thighs and tapered down to the ankles. A BIL took one look at it and accused me of AOS. Upon asking what that was, he said, “Aqua Overall Syndrome.” They went into the donation bin as soon as I got home from vacation.

Edit: Today, nothing that represents youth beyond my years, such as something with a Barbie or Hello Kitty logo on it.

tinyfaery's avatar

I wear what I like. If someone wants to pigeonhole me because of it, I guess it makes them stupid, because they would be wrong.

Mama_Cakes2's avatar

Wolf sweaters or sweatshirts with kittens on them
oversized belt buckles
The Canadian tuxedo

boffin's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr I don’t get it. . . You think @Cruiser would look good in pink.
And, just so you know. . .
The meat was / is raw (pink). . . Tu Tu Tar Tare. . . What’s the difference?

ratboy's avatar

I avoid string bikinis for fear being mistaken for a hot young chick.

Nially_Bob's avatar

The only piece of clothing that comes to mind is the burberry cap as I don’t want to be mistaken for a chav. That aside, it’s mostly determined by my preferences.

@ratboy
You’re not wrong my friend. Just the other day I went out in my string bikini and all the men (and even women!) couldn’t stop staring at me.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

@ratboy and @Nially_Bob The adults in our family are required to don on a string bikini while pregnant and pose for photos. Hmm, maybe I’ll send their children a copy of the photo should they complain when it is their, or their partner’s, turn.

delirium's avatar

(And @Pied_Pfeffer is not just talking about the moms-to-be…)

mandybookworm's avatar

I try not to look like a slut. I also try not to conform to the rest of the world’s standards of Beauty
