I have a friend who could really use the help of this book, but I only have the 4th edition. Does anyone know what changes have been made or where I can find out? I don’t want to give her an out of date book, but I also don’t want her to miss out on a useful tool if the basics remain the same. I can’t imagine MLA or APA have changed all that much, but I could be wrong.

No, she can’t afford to just go buy the new one.

Perhaps you could go to a bookstore and look at it? A lot of books that have multiple editions will have a beginning section that describes some of the changes made from the older edition.

I’m using a 10th edition book when the course calls for the 12th. I looked over the newer one and the chapters were all the same. I’m betting what I miss is little new things added, like quips or facts that aren’t too important to study with.
I wonder if she could go to a bookstore at her school to check it out and compare.

MLA and APA have changed a fair bit, particularly in regards to citing online resources. You can however, see many of the changes online at the APA and MLA websites or by going to the website of the Purdue University Online Writing Lab. It’s possible that she could use your book and then look for changes and updates on the web.
