If you were an obnoxious teenager, how are you as an adult?

“Great Question” (4points)

The other day I was in a library, working quietly at a desk, when a bunch of teenagers loudly came in and rudely demanded the librarian tell them where the water fountain is located. The librarian simply pointed them in the direction and ignored their behavior. Moments later, the pack was wandering around causing more loud distractions. Knowing nothing could be done about stopping them, I packed up my stuff and moved.

With school back in session, I expect to see more teens behaving badly – especially on public transit once the school day ends. Seeing these teens, I wonder what will happen to them as adults, if they will mature and become respectable human beings or continue to behave obnoxiously.

To me, an obnoxious teenager is someone who:

- talks loudly in a library just so everyone pays attention to them,
– acts like the world owes them everything,
– shows no consideration for others,
– uses their cell phone rudely on public transit,
– back talks adults,
– does not display any manners,
– etc. etc. etc.

I’m not talking about the teens that commit crimes or have had interactions with juvenile corrections, or the ones with serious issues who need professional help. Instead, I’m referring to the average teenager who acts obnoxiously.

If you were (or know someone who was) an obnoxious teenager, in what ways were you (they) obnoxious?

How’s life in adulthood?

I was a good teenager and now I get to be obnoxious as an adult. (Still pretty good most of the time, though.)

I am still as uppity as I used to be about changing the world but I’m much less into breaking people’s hearts (if they liked me). As far as rudeness, yes I was one of the group of loud teenagers on the bus – I look back on it now and cringe as I hate listening to those groups now.

I think what you are talking about is ‘pack’ behavior. Individually maybe they are not so bad. Some adults, of course, revel in this behavior and carry it through to gangs—and politics—.I know I was influenced by the pack as a girl and as an adult sometimes, not always in a bad way, though.

I think and I could very well be wrong that I am not an obnoxious individual. I jokingly tell my younger brother that he is like the little fish in Finding Nemo (you know, the one that gets up in Nemo’s grill and says, “I’M OBNOXIOUS”) but I don’t believe either of my siblings are any more obnoxious than me.

The people I knew in high school tend to fall into one of these categories:

- They were obnoxious in high school and were even more obnoxious once they graduated (which can partially be attributed to easier access to alcohol, but I know plenty of sober, straight-edge people who are unfathomably obnoxious.)

- They were obnoxious in high school, but had a “wake-up” experience (I’ve had some wonderful conversations with these type of people; the way I viewed them changed.)

- Those who weren’t obnoxious in high school, but were total arseholes when they left.

Teens and public transit… oh man, I have so many stories :)

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – You, uppity? I don’t believe it! ~ :-)

That’s just about 98 percent of teenagers, I think. It’s part of being young and self-absorbed. I know I cringe, too @Simone_De_Beauvoir. Shudder to think of myself in 1996.

I think most grow out of it, those who don’t run for office.

I SAID IT!!

@prolificus Ha, I know it’s shocking.

I’m still the same…good guy unless my Irish temper pops up!

@muppetish – what is it with teens and public transit?!

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – just when I think you are one person whom I’d never want to meet (because our words have butt heads a few times, and your philosophy on life drives me crazy, and because I’m a stick-in-the-mud), I check out your youtube video and see that you’re quite alright! So, maybe you’re not as uppity as you’d have us believe! ;-)

@prolificus ask her to share with you the “Pregnant Simone and the Noisy Neighbor” story, then you will adore her like the rest of us.

@prolificus Well, which youtube video was it, :)? I’ve made others.
@liminal Alex does a much better telling of it than anyone, lol.

I wanna see!!!! Where, how?!?!

prolificus's avatar

@Simone_De_BeauvoirThis one. You look more tame than I’ve imagined. :)

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@prolificus What have you imagined? :) Listen, I had a specific text to read, no one was annoying me and no policy changes would have taken place if I didn’t read. You give me a topic (or 10) that I’m passionate about and it’ll be a different story.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – a cross between Gloria Steinem, Margaret Sanger, and a dominatrix. (said with love, of course)

@prolificus I am honored. Thank you. What you saw in that youtube video is a version of me but I change often – there is something to be said for being a blank canvas sometimes because I can look however I want, whenever I want especially when playing with gender performances. When I’m out and I look like I did in the video, no one expects me to speak up, to stand up for others, to be aggressive – it’s actually a pretty good weapon to have, this look of mine.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – did I mention that such women scare me? :)

I was an obnoxious teen. The thing is, I didn’t know I was an obnoxious teen and I didn’t get what the hell the “obnoxious adults” were about. Now that I am an adult I am more mellow, but—- if I am transparent—I get irritated witht “those youngin’s” because I miss the freedom to be ignorant about thinking the world revolves around me and should bow to my whims.

prolificus's avatar

@liminal – you get irritated at those youngin’s because you miss the freedom. I get irritated because they annoy the heck out of me and I want to put them in their place! I wouldn’t want the freedom to act like an obnoxious teenager. Although, I do see some pleasure to be had with getting away with speaking off-handedly, in the moment, when necessary.

I was always Miss Goody Two-Shoes, and I still am.

The good old pack mentality. I went through my phase, as many teens do. It’s part of growing up I suppose. It can be annoying listening to them, but I can’t say I pass too much remarks.
Most grow out of it. I have. As @liminal put it, they too deserve the freedom to be ignorant.
Having said that, if a group of loud teens came blasting through a library and I was trying to work, I’d probably take on the obnoxious adult role

A good friend of mine was the epitome of obnoxious and every cop knew by his first name before he was 15. Great husband, dad and owner of a successful thriving big name auto parts store. I wish I had his money!
