If interviewer contacts your boss when you ask them not to, what do you do then?

Asked by LKidKyle1985 (6599points) October 11th, 2010

One of my co-workers recently applied for jobs at other locations, and requested specifically that his current boss not be contacted. Well, it somehow got back to his boss anyways, and has caused some problems for him. I have never heard of this happening before and I was just wondering if theres anything he can do about this? Seems pretty shady for the interviewer to do.

Do you or your co-worker know exactly, what actually happened here? Your question says “if interviewer contacts your boss when you ask them not to” but in your details you say ”... it somehow got back to his boss anyways…” ?

You could assure the current boss that you were just testing the market, but not planning on leaving, which he or she may (is likely) not to believe.

You could say that it was a mistake.

Yeah I guess someone at the other place knew our boss and called to ask her about the guy they interviewed. I don’t know if they knew she was his boss when they called, just that he worked at US bank and so did she.

I don’t think there’s much you can do except to keep looking for a job and hope you don’t get fired before you find one. Some employers will be vindictive that way, but that’s completely unprofessional. A decent employer understands that people are on the job market all the time, and shouldn’t be surprised or upset.

You can also say that you wanted to see what your value is on the job market. The implication is that he’s not paying you enough, but you don’t admit to that.
