How long does a Passport from California last?

Asked by Marchofthefox (787points) November 8th, 2010

I believe I got a Passport in the summer of 2008 because my family and I were supposed to go to Mexico but we never went and I left it with my family by accident.
I’m sixteen now (seventeen im March). I was wondering how long would the first one last?

Passports are issued by the Federal Government, not the states and I believe that you would have to not only “apply for a new passport”, but you have to do it in person, rather than through the mail, before your next overseas trip because the passport you have was issued before you were 16. Check out this U.S State Department page for information on age requirements for U.S. passports.

All passports from the US are Federal and last 10 years.

As the others have said, US passports are issued by the federal government, and not the state. Can you get your existing passport back from your family?

The one I got from Ohio lasts 10 years. Since California is bigger, maybe theirs lasts longer.

If you are under age, yours will be good for 5 years. Adult passports are good for 10 years. If you are planning on traveling within 3 months of your passport expiration, you should get it renewed before you go.

I didn’t realize that Californians needed a passport in order to go to other states. :)

It’s the United States that issues passports, not the individual state. Adult passports, as everyone has told you, last 10 years. Child passports only last five years. I’m not sure what age is considered adult by the US Department of State.

Adult passport is over the age of 16. If you got your passport two years ago, you would have a child’s passport, and it would be good for 5 years, or until 2013.

The state of California does not issue passports.

Since we’re on the subject of passports and minors, a passport is an official form of identification, like a driver’s license. You should take care to keep it safe, just like your social security card.
