Metal arrows sticking out of the ground?

I've seen these a lot and never known what they are. They look like a arrow [the kind that points at something..not the kind fired from a bow]. They appear to be made of pipe, maybe about an inch or so in diameter, and they're about 2-3 foot tall. The ones I've seen are either yellow or white. Does anyone know what these are?

Those are likely marking buried gas pipelines, and possibly (I'd need to see a picture) are a vent for the pipeline to keep any minor leaks from becoming explosions.
