NSFW What are my chances of being negative?

Asked by bwalla900 (64points) June 14th, 2011

I’ll try and be as politically correct as I can about this, but I am in a situation. A friend of mine just tested positive for HIV. Although he didn’t know he had it and is unsure for how long we believe he contracted it approx. 3 months ago. About 3 weeks ago (prior to him knowing)[we are gay] we had unprotected anal sex. I was the top and we were both pretty drunk. It never should have happened but it did.

The details of what happened (kind of embarrassing) are me not even fully inserting and going in about 2 minutes. We did use lubricant and I went pee right after.

I am terrified because I’ve been on the straight and narrow for most of my life and now this. There was no blood or tearing(that I am aware of) and I have no cuts or sores on my penis. I am terrified that I could have be positive and plan on getting tested VERY soon.

I realize the only way to know for sure is to get tested but perhaps some of you have been in similar situations or are more knowledgeable then I am. I understand I took a risk and will accept the outcome but also understand the situation may have been slightly lower risk for me. Do you think there is a decent chance I could still be negative?

Did you enter him or the other way around?

I entered him

I’m no doctor and this is a total assumption but I would think it’s less likely of you being infected since you entered him. As long as there weren’t any cuts or open sores on either of you, I would think chances are slim that you contracted HIV.

I can only hope, but your thought process is the same as mine. From what I’ve heard/read my exposure was less then that as if it were the other way around but it’s still a very scary thought…especially since everything else in my life is finally going perfect.

Good luck with everything. Stay positive (no pun intended) and I’m sure everything will turn out fine for you. It was a mistake that so many people make. Live and learn. That’s all you can do.

DO your test and hope for the best.

I also happen to be gay and get tested regularly. From the way you described the situation, the chances you have contracted HIV are slim.

You have to wait 3 months after the incident to get tested and during those 3 months you cannot have unprotected sex. That will give you the best results from the test.

There are newer tests that you can take very soon after the possible exposure, but I am not sure of their reliability. I’m not saying they’re not good tests. I’m simply saying I don’t know enough about them.

Be safe.

You need to wait to have unprotected sex (why are you having unprotected sex??????) and wait to be tested.

While your chances are good that you did not contract HIV, they are not nil. So you do have to be tested in three months.

Good luck.

I couldn’t tell you.
But it sounds to me like the chances are slim.
Get tested as soon as you’re supposed to. That’s all you can do. :/
Best of wishes. Sending good vibes your way. :)

The HIV antibody test looks for antibodies to the virus in a person’s blood. For most people these antibodies take 6 weeks to 3 months to develop. In very rare cases, it can take up to 6 months. It is extremely rare for a person to take any longer then 6 months to develop detectable antibodies. (Source)

In case you or your friend haven’t seen this article yet @bwalla900, one man has been cured of HIV

If he was the passive partner and it was only one time, your chances are good you will not get infected. Complicating factors would be if you had a cut or open sore on your penis at the time. Failing that, you will probably be fine. But definitely do get tested. If you do get infected, early treatment now can make it a very manageable, survivable condition. I hope you turn out to have been lucky, but don’t push your luck. Be careful too, and that includes not getting so intoxicated that you throw caution to the wind.

No trust me this was a HUGE GIGANTIC eye opener…if I am negative I think my drinking habits will change drastically and I don’t plan on fooling around unless I am with someone in a relationship and even then we would both get tested and have a long talk before I’d even consider unprotected sex again.
