Who has a key to your home, in case of emergency? Do you have a key to anyones elses home?

Asked by Eureka (1655points) December 30th, 2011

My mom recently fell, and the EMT’s had to break the door in. This freaked my brother in law out, and he came by my job today and gave me a key to my mom’s house and a key to his and sis’s house, and asked if he could make a copy of my key.

I allowed him to, as my days of having anything to hide are long over. But it got me to wondering if this was a common thing – to have keys to family members homes? Or are we just nuts?

I have keys to everyone’s homes.

Yes, even yours

My direct neighbour has a set (although I am not sure if he can find them in case I need them), as well as my parents (of whom I have a set too).
And just recently, after long debate with myself, I have given a set to my girlfriend too; she is now, after three years, allowed to get out of the house unattented.~

I feel better knowing that some of our closest friends have keys to our house.

Only I have a key to my own apartment. But as a landlord, I have keys to other peoples’ apartments. Bwaa-ha-ha-ha!!

But your question makes me think it might be a good idea to give a key to my apartment (and the entrance door) to my parents…but it worries me what if they come for a surprise visit while I have a naked slave girl hanging by her ankles from the ceiling?

I live in an apartment with a concierge. (It’s actually quite handy as it makes getting deliveries a lot easier as he signs for everything and has it brought up even when I’m out.)

@X0110 – well, the next time you stop by, would you mind taking the trash out?
I

@HungryGuy You should be morw worried if they fall into their passion somewhere in your apartment while you aren’t there and stain your carpet or couch.

@Eureka It’s actually o’s and i’s

@Lightlyseared – how nice that must be! I always have to have deliveries sent to my job.
@XOIIO – I’m learning!

My kids all have keys to our house but that’s it. We don’t have keys to theirs. I should talk to them about that. Good question @Eureka. I don’t know my neighbours enough to give them keys (sadly).

I don’t have keys right now, because I am not close, but I had a key to my Mom’s house and she had one to mine.

Nobody and everybody I wish to.

I switched to keyless locks a year ago. Everyone I wish to grant access has their own code.
I can set a code to expire when I want a temporary one.
I get a text message to my phone when one has attempted and failed and when one is successful.
I also can open and lock the door from my phone app.

Best thing I ever invested in.

My parents friends have a key to our house and us to them. My mother has keys to her parents house, even though we don’t live in the same state. It’s more a in-case-they-aren’t-there thing. But I live in the woods, so locking the door isn’t a major concern. The only things that have broken in are squirrels that fell down our chimney.

Nobody hos keys to our house – not even us. We don’t lock our doors. Even when we go on vacation. Come on over.
We have keys to Mother in Law’s house and our neighbor’s house.

TheIntern55's avatar

@LuckyGuy Good to know! When do you next go on vacation? I’ll come over and, uh, house-sit <giggles>

LuckyGuy's avatar

@TheIntern55 No problem. You are welcome to stay. I will let my neighbors know so they don’t shoot out your tires.

I don’t have keys to any family members homes because I don’t live local to any of them. I used to have a key exchange arrangement with the next door neighbours that I had become good friends with. Initially that was so we could get in and take care of their cat when they went away. But since he died and his wife moved away, that’s no longer the case. So at present, no-one else has my house keys and I don’t have anyone else’s.

Only my boyfriend and my landlady. I have a key to my dad’s house.

I have a key to my next door neighbor’s house, my brother’s house and 3 other friends for whom I often housesit. I think it’s a good idea as long as both parties are fully aware of the fact that they have the keys, and that the keeper of the key should not simply drop in whenever they want to, it should be for emergencies and the convenience of the homeowner who gave out the key. I’ve had on occasion to go to the homes of my neighbor, brother and friends to get something that they needed when they were out of town (even when I wasn’t staying at their home).
