What do you think of couples who don't want children?

Asked by Charles (4826points) January 7th, 2012

Is childless by choice abnormal? Do most people who come across a childless couple assume they “can’t” have kids?

It is their absolute right. What one does not have the right to do is judge them.

Charles's avatar

Actually, I think everyone has the right to judge them. Is there a law against judging people?

Michael_Huntington's avatar

Good for them. 7 billion people is more than enough anyway.

I think that couples who don’t want children…don’t want children. Probably 30 years ago people would assume infertility if a couple didn’t have children, not so much anymore.

chyna's avatar

More people should choose to be childless, especially the ones that abuse their children.
It is everyone’s right to choose, I don’t judge nor do I wonder if they can’t have children or chose not to. It’s none of my business.

Mariah's avatar

Perfectly legitimate choice to me. I don’t think anything about them.

Ayesha's avatar

I don’t think anything about them. Their choice, who am I?

blueiiznh's avatar

None of my business and all their choice.

Keep_on_running's avatar

Yep. Breaking from tradition is abnormal. So is being an atheist, so is choosing to never marry, so is challenging mainstream views. Okay, obviously I’m being sarcastic. I think nothing, but good on them.

Sometimes I’ll meet someone who doesn’t want kids and I’ll think it’s too bad because I think they would make a great parent. But, more often than not, I am relieved that a couple doesn’t want children because if they don’t want them, they probably wouldn’t make very good parents.

Hasn’t anyone here seen “Idiocracy”?
Smart people decide to have no children, or as many as 2.
The idiots have dozens.
The result is an overpopulation of idiots.

HungryGuy's avatar

No kids. No cats. No dogs. Don’t want any of those…

I just want to keep my slave girl naked in my cage and be done with it.

Blackberry's avatar

What is there to think of them? That they’ll retire earlier? DINK for the win (Double Income, No Kids).

filmfann's avatar

A friend of mine hates his siblings and has no kids. When he dies, he says he is leaving his money to the NRA. I suppose that’s fine, since he is fine with it.
But I must add that my kids have brought me immense joy.

There are enough people in the world raising children they never wanted. So I thank God for the ones smart enough to figure it out before having them and then raising them poorly. The world can do better without children who grow up to be adults with mommy and daddy issues because they were unwanted.
The only time I find I have issues with people who choose not to have children is when they act superior for not having anything as if that is some sort of accomplishment. Or when they act hateful to children as if they are some sort of plague. Otherwise I’m fine with it.
Most of the time they make great uncles or aunts because they have the extra cash to spend on their nephews and nieces.

I think they don’t want children. It’s their choice, and it has been going on since the beginning of time. We’ve just started focusing on it recently for some reason.

@Charles Having a legal right to do something isn’t the same as it being right to do it.

Don’t care/none of my business.

ZEPHYRA's avatar

Beats bringing them here and making them suffer! Freedom of choice.

@Blackberry should get 1000 GA’s

There are websites to help with support groups to help them cope with those who would judge. I just hope that couples who don’t want children will NOT have any.

Unknown82's avatar

I think if you don’t want children then don’t have them it isn’t something to take lightly the are a handful and it take patience and what not

tinyfaery's avatar

I call these people my friends and I think I can actually hang out and have fun with them.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

I often assume they’ve given a great deal of thought since it’s not the human norm not to breed on and on. No, I’ve never assumed it because of infertility or whatever. I wish more people gave as much thought.

I love my children & I love my grandchildren, but if a couple has decided they do not what to have children…... then I think it is none of my business. After all, who better to know how they feel personally than they do? Having children takes a tremendous investment of time & love & financial support, and for me it was totally worth it. But some people simply do not feel the same way that I do & that is definitely their right.

geeky_mama's avatar

The only people I judge are those people who I’ve met who have brought children in to the world and are abusive or neglectful towards their children. I’ve met a fair number of those people in recent years and they anger me at their selfishness. Don’t have children if you don’t want to take care of them and nurture them!

emeraldisles's avatar

Who cares, your not in their shoes? I hate people who say that people who only have one child or no child are’‘selfish’’, Seriously you have no right to say that since you don’t know me/understand/accept there is other thinking besides your own.

Nullo's avatar

Seems a bit of a waste to me, but eh.

@Michael_Huntington The solution is planetary colonization. :D

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

What? I think they just don’t want children. They’re still people, and it’s really none of my business.

Berserker's avatar

Nothing. They don’t want kids, or they do want kids, doesn’t make a difference to anyone but them, I guess.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I don’t want children and I don’t consider it to be abnormal. The way I see it, there will always be enough people that want children to prevent the human race from dying out which means that those of us that don’t feel the need to have children aren’t doing any harm at all. I think it would be more harmful to the world if every person that was physically able decided to reproduce!

OpryLeigh's avatar

@Nullo What is it a waste of?

Nullo's avatar

@Leanne1986 Genes, legacy, that sort of thing.

Blackberry's avatar

These are cool pictures and all, but they also remind me of another reason why I don’t want kids.

Nullo's avatar

@Blackberry Looks like someone spilled coffee grounds on the diorama again…

Blackberry's avatar

@Nullo Good comparison lol.

EverRose11's avatar

I say Bravo, If I was younger and had a choice to bring more children into this world as it is today, I would choose not to.

Aesthetic_Mess's avatar

I empathize with them. I agree with them. I say more power to them.
