Does anyone have an idea about how the news sheet worked on the show Babylon 5?

Asked by DaphneT (5750points) January 30th, 2012

That’s if you’ve seen or remember the show. I recall a scene where one of the characters went to a wall-mounted terminal, keyed or swiped something and got a ‘flimsy’ with the daily news from Earth printed on it, in an ‘old-style’ for the show newspaper format of columns. The flimsy is what puzzled me at the time and today.

I couldn’t figure out how it could be read without a background, only the words and pictures were printed, so the rest of the sheet was clear. How would that work?

It would work as well as a space station the size of a large city with multiple humanoid races all speaking the same language.

Or as well as a human being who turns into an alien and goes back in time to be that alien race’s Messiah.

Or as well as an alien who turns into a half-human.

Or as well as an alien who sees his own death at the hands of his mortal enemy, but who was killed only to save him from a vicious mind-controlling other alien.

Do I really need to go on? It’s a TV sci-fi show. The props aren’t supposed to work in the real world.

The same answer that a fan got when he asked how the transporters on Star Trek worked: Very well, thank you.

I’m not sure I understand the problem. I can read printed words on a clear sheet without any special difficulty.

I think it might have similarities with the clear lit sparkly revolving super-duper. illustrator field in Angie’s lab on the show, Bones.

Something involving hologram technology would be my guess. But thats coming from. Som eone with more imagination than technology expertise. So….

BABYLON 5——what a great blast from the past. I loved that show, hokiness and all.

I loved Babylon 5.

I guess if you hold the sheet above or infront of a plain desk you’d be able to read it easily. Maybe it has a control on it for changing the colour of the text so it contrasts with whatever background you have.
