What should never, under any circumstance, be family secrets?

Asked by AnonymousWoman (6533points) October 11th, 2012

I understand that there are families who don’t want anyone else to know about family problems. However, this isn’t always healthy. Just wondering what you feel are not healthy family secrets. Feel free to add what you view as healthy family secrets as well.

Do you mean secrets from other family members or from friends or from the general public?

The 3 “A’s”. Abuse, addiction and adultry.
All of the above thrive in an environment of secrecy and addicts and abusers especially, count on secrets to protect them from the consequences of their behaviors. I am a truth teller and absolutely believe that the truth WILL set you free!

Heath history. It helps if at least the 3 generations, which may exist at the same time, pass on causes of death and diseases which may be passed down. Knowing ahead of time that you may be susceptible to conditions or diseases can put you on the look out for early detection. They found out I had breast cancer at a very early stage and I only needed a lumpectomy and radiation. It was NOT a surprise. No recurrence so far, but I’ll always be checking.

@janbb I was thinking about things like abuse and how certain families expect that to be kept in the family. There may be more I haven’t considered, though.

Incest/ sexual abuse, addiction, definately other siblings (since I’m the sibling no one knew about, it’s pretty hurtful.)

I’m holding in a womanizing cousins creepy husband, and a sisters illegimate baby casted off at birth.

Well, I think things like incest and abuse should not be a secret from all family members but I don’t necessarily see a need to tell the world about them unless it is a question of involving others who can help. On the other hand, I don’t think it should be obligatory on any family member to keep the secret from outsiders if they feel they want to or need to tell.
