What did you think of tonight's concession and victory speeches?

Asked by augustlan (47745points) November 6th, 2012

I saw Romney’s concession speech, and thought it was really good. Gracious, short, and with good will toward the president. I missed Obama’s victory speech, so if anyone has a link to it, that would be great. What did you think of the speeches?

I thought Romney was quite gracious.
I don’t think Obama was as inspiring as he had been, but I am still very proud of my President.

Got a good link to Obama’s speech: http://video.msnbc.msn.com/nbc-news/49720780#49720780

Watching it now.

I thought well of them both, although I don’t think Romney could top McCain’s 2008 concession speech for graciousness: “Tonight—tonight, more than any night, I hold in my heart nothing but love for this country and for all its citizens, whether they supported me or Senator Obama—whether they supported me or Senator Obama, I wish Godspeed to the man who was my former opponent and will be my president.”

McCain’s supporters, however, did not match their candidate’s good sportsmanship. In their vocal responses and applause, Romney’s supporters showed a lot more civility toward the opposition than did McCain’s four years ago.

Obama didn’t have to say much; all he really had to do was supply the rousing language to give his supporters an outlet for their emotions. I think he did that perfectly well and got a few good lines in there as well. Here’s a transcript.

I liked Obama’s speech, too. I think he hit some important points, like mentioning compromise and that we rise and fall as one nation.

The only time I see Republikans be gracious is during concessions. It probably doesn’t help them.

Did not listen to either. Might do later. Maybe.

I was hoping Romney would be a dick for schaedenfreude or however that’s spelled, but he was nice (if brief).

I got bored with Obama’s speech, as I often do, and stopped watching.

I thought they were way too late. I didn’t want to wait around, but my daughter wanted company. Finally saw Romney’s speech and wasn’t really impressed. I wanted to hear more of a call for reconciliation.

I tried to wait for Obama’s speech, but couldn’t hack it. Went to bed. I’m not going to listen to it. I think it was rude of him to wait so long. Now let’s see if he can show a little backbone and find a way to get Congress to do their job.

Both were appropriate. After hours of watching returns, they were the final touch and the signal to go to bed.

Rude of Obama to wait so long? He was held up by Romney. He couldn’t formally claim victory until after Romney made the concession phone call. And Romney held out as long as possible.

Romney did wait too long. But Obama waited too long after Romney was done. Even my teenage daughter couldn’t wait him out, and she really wanted to see him. I think he should have been ready to go on as soon as Romney was done.

Remember, this was after 1:30 am, Eastern time. I don’t know when he finally went on, but don’t forget, it is three hours later in the East than it is Pacific time.
