[NSFW?] People who don’t flush, what do you think of the offenders, or the worse situations you discover they have left?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) August 22nd, 2013

[NSFW?] When you go into a restroom and discovered the toilet not flushed how do you feel about that? If it happens in a public restroom do you view it the same or different if it happened in a private residence? If so, if it was a home you visited would it be different than if it was a visitor that did it in your home? Does age give the person more slack, say if they were a toddler or someone newly bathroom trained? Regardless of where it happens is it the same or worse if they leave……ahem….chunks, or solids? If it is a private residence, yours or another person’s, do you say anything about it or just grin and bear it and flush it as best you can without being grossed out (if it does that to you)?

How do you think I feel about that? Not really in question, is it?

Water conservation in your own home is one thing (“If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down.”). Public toilets should always be flushed.

I want to do what you do with dogs to stop them shitting where they are not supposed to shit:
Push their faces into their own shit.

If you went to the bathroom in a home, maybe you know them, maybe you are a guest of a friend of the host, and you go in there and the bowl is a deep yellow not weak lemonade yellow, you think nothing of it?

Public toilets should always be flushed.
You enter a one-person toilet in a small public place behind someone mature enough to know how to flush. You discover a large deposit floating in the bowl, you have no thoughts about that person or how they were raised concerning bathroom use?

I have such a weak stomach, that even the stench of such deposits would make me gag! Nevermind the actual sight of such a thing, I know it’s life but I’d really prefer not to see/smell that and I would view such a person who didn’t flush unfavourably!

It might be for drug use. A common drug practice in Sub-Saharan Africa is to ferment human shit and then sniff it for an extreme form of hallucination. Perhaps those who migrated here adapted this concept or the natives picked up on the practice.

In public restrooms I am pretty annoyed by people who don’t flush. Sometimes the flushing mechanism doesn’t work well and it is not the patron’s fault. That is one thing, but there are people who won’t flush because they don’t want to touch the button or handle to flush, which I find absurd.

At home I don’t flush if I pee in the middle of the night because my husband is a light sleeper, but it took me a while not to automatically flush. If I lived in an area that had lots of drought I might even flush less in general to conserve, but only in my home when only I or my husband would encounter the tissue in the toilet.

DominicX's avatar

I have little tolerance for no flushing, even in a public bathroom. If you don’t want to touch the handle, then at least flush it with your foot. At home, it’s unacceptable. I remember my roommate did it once, absent-mindedly. That I could forgive, but a regular habit of it would be weird.

Yes, dirty public washrooms are nasty sometimes. Go elsewhere.
A temporary guest in your home who doesn’t flush or a home where someone hasn’t flushed . . . you flush, without comment. Don’t go back or invite a guest back if you wish.
A person may react to feces much more before having a baby. With parenthood usually comes more tolerance for such things. It isn’t pleasant, particularly with non relatives, but most of us take it in stride. You do have you have to do. Kids and older folks have accidents. It’s part of living.

I find it a bit gross if someone has left a floater but I don’t give it too much thought other than that. I certainly wouldn’t bother to call someone out on it if I went to the toilet in their home to find it unflushed. I have far more important things to be concerned about!

Blondesjon's avatar

If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down.

I used to think this was just a cute saying until I realized it applied to folks with shallow wells.

KNOWITALL's avatar

I get annoyed, it’s adults doing it in my office, so it’s even worse. I’ll only clean it up if the cleaning staff aren’t coming in, and sometimes if it’s too bad, I just put an ‘out of order’ sign up.

I don’t get it, really I don’t.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I feel the same way about non-flushers as I do about women who leave their used menstrual products in the open instead of wrapping them up in tp- utterly disgusted.

deni's avatar

I always flush in a public restroom unless I have only peed and the urine is perfectly clear. I have to drink tons of water to avoid headaches where I live unfortunately with the dry climate, so that is sometimes the case. I don’t think that’s gross. It doesn’t even look like anything is in the toilet and it certainly doesn’t have an odor. When it does I flush it. Same at home. I will not flush if I pee and it’s not dark yellow and disgusting. I hate that. I do not want to smell your urine regardless of whose it is. I do not care for that smell at all.

JLeslie's avatar

@deni But, haven’t you also left tissue in the toilet?

KNOWITALL's avatar

Also tell me, how do you leave feces on the front lip of a toilet? It’s like they try to be nasty.

FutureMemory's avatar

I don’t use public toilets so that’s a non issue. I’ll use public urinals, but no way am I taking a dump anywhere but my own home. Gross.

I could care less if someone forgets to flush. What a non issue. Just flush it immediately if you see someone else’s and forget about it. Waste of time to even trip about something like that.

bossob's avatar

It’s not pleasant, but I guess I’ve used too many outhouses, latrines, and porta-potties to get too worked up about it.

Some toilets aren’t powerful enough to remove a load in one flush, and leave floaters behind. Not pleasant, but…shit happens.

LornaLove's avatar

This happened to me today, but it was not feces. I just don’t understand why the woman that left the cubical did not pull the chain. Perhaps a fear of touching the toilet lever? In general I find peoples public toilet habits less than clean. The other day I sat on a toilet and it was soaking wet. Not nice. I pulled up my stockings in shock of course they were wet. I then took them off and threw them away (in the provided bin). Some women I hear stand when they pee, which is fine, but leave it behind? What are they thinking?

dabbler's avatar

I can’t think of any reason to Not flush solids.
But I spent many years in California where “if it’s yellow let it mellow” makes a lot of sense for water conservation.
Leaving anything on the seat – yellow, brown, or bloody – is another matter, uncivilized !!

Sunny2's avatar

Do you think the same people, who don’t clean up after themselves in public washrooms, are also litterbugs? They have no concern about the resulting mess inconveniencing others.

livelaughlove21's avatar

Shit is the worst, but used tampons complete with period blood is a close second. It’s gross and I usually go to another stall, but I’ve never said anything to anyone about it.

I’ve don’t recall ever having this problem outside of a public restroom.

Pandora's avatar

@syz LMAO, I have to remember that. I never heard that saying.

cazzie's avatar

Living with three ADD/ADHD and ASD males, I have the same reaction, but I am so used to it, I just flush it and carry on with my life. If I see it in a public toilet, I usually try to flush it and then use a different stall. Usually, the damn thing is broken and the tank isn’t filled with enough water for a flush.
We don’t flush tampons here in this old city. Especially because the whole thing is treated and composted. Solids (like tampons and other unresolvable things are filtered out, but replacing/cleaning the filters is an icky job…) I’ve seen a tour of this facility so I know exactly what happens to our poo.)

Dutchess_III's avatar

I don’t come across that very often, but when I do, I don’t think much about it, honestly. I just flush the toilet. If it’s in a public facility, most of the time I find that the toilet is clogged.
If it happened at my house I would announce loud and clear, “Please make sure to flush the toilet after you use it!”

There has been only one time that it upset me. I just just had my first baby. I shared a room with another new mother. The sign on the bathroom door, in our room, clearly stated “Patients only.”
Well, her husband used that bathroom, didn’t put the lid down and didn’t even flush! I was upset enough that I talked to the staff, and he used the public toilet down the hall after that.

deni's avatar

@JLeslie Yeah, but I don’t think thats gross. If someone does I think thats their problem. What if I had gone in, wiped my nose or something with a tissue then thrown it in? They don’t know the difference. In that case a flush is completely wasteful. We are already wasteful enough as a society and I try not to be a part of that as much as I can. Clear urine is nothing to be afraid of, more people should strive for it.

JLeslie's avatar

@deni I don’t like waste either, but when I sit down I want anything from the person before me flushed away. Many reasons. One, it is just psychological, somehow seems cleaner to me whether rational or not. Two, if tissue is floating I wonder if the toilet is having flush problems, and I don’t want to be the one to clog it, so I am going to flush your tissue most likely before I sit down. Make sure it does flush down.

I dislike the automatic flushers, because it often does extra flushes and wastes a lot of water and sometimes starts to flush while I am sitting. But, one reason businesses use them is because people don’t flush. It’s a viscious circle.
