If you were watching pornography and someone came to visit, would you change the channel or turn the TV off?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46830points) May 11th, 2014

My husband stopped by an acquaintance’s house to ask him some mechanic questions. The guy was watching really graphic porn on a 60” TV. When Rick knocked the guy was sitting just a few feet from the door but didn’t get up. His grown daughter answered the door, let him in then went to the back of the house.

Rick was very uncomfortable (he’s not into porn) and didn’t stay long.

It shocked me, and him, that the guy didn’t bother to change the channel or turn the TV off, and it REALLY shocked me that his daughter could see what he was watching, but apparently it didn’t faze the guy at all.

What are your thoughts on it?

Wow, that whole scenario creeps me out a bit, way too many undefined boundaries. Watching porn is fine by me, what ever floats your boat. And watching it with a sexual partner/spouse/lover is fine too. But never around someone you are not intimate with, certainly not a son or daughter or anyone of the next generation.

And turn off the damn TV when a guest comes over!

Just checking our gut reactions!

That depends entirely on who is visiting.
Also, what is a TV?

OK, let’s take this specific example with my husband. What do you think @ragingloli?

Oh, to clarify, the daughter wasn’t watching. She was in another part of the house. To answer the door, though, she had to walk through the living room. But even that creeped me out.

Ew. Watching porn in a room where your family will pass through is gross in itself.

Rick was very uncomfortable (he’s not into porn) and didn’t stay long.

I’d think he’d be uncomfortable in that situation whether he was into porn or not. Straight men don’t typically sit around and watch porn together.

True story:
A relative of a friend of mine was in his own home watching porn. He is known in the neighborhood as a guy that fixes things and has a ton of tools. Two 15 year olds were sent over by their father to borrow a couple of tools. The guy had gone to the door, the kids asked for the tools and the guy left them on the porch to get the tools. The kids walked on in after he went further in the house to wait on him. Porn was still on. The kids told their parents who called the police. There was an investigation, but the guy was not arrested.
It really could have gone the other way.

So to answer your question after that rambling story, it is best to turn off porn when someone comes knocking.

It raised my pedophile radar to level red. Even if the daughter was grown it speaks to the culture she grew up in.

I don’t begrudge anyone watching porn, but I expect they would do so discreetly. The fact that this man did so with little to no discretion especially when a minor would be exposed to explicit subject matter opens the door to questionable decision making. No offense but the fact that Rick did not bow out and say I can come back at a more appropriate time brings his choice to enable this behavior by not leaving immediately into question.

He pretty much left immediately, but he didn’t say anything. I mean, it IS the guy’s own house and Rick dropped by unexpectedly. Now if he’d invited him over I can see Rick asking his leave and saying something.

The daughter is a grown woman, but still…... blech.

@Dutchess_III
Your husband? Well, how does he react to porn? Especially the stuff that I watch.

Cruiser's avatar

@Dutchess_III “belch” I agree. He apparently has no filter and I would call way in advance of ever going over to this man’s home.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I don’t know how he reacts, but I know he’s not into it @ragingloli.

The man lacks social filters in many areas @Cruiser.

anniereborn's avatar

@chyna The police were called for exactly what reason?

chyna's avatar

^Apparently the parents thought the man was showing the kids porn.

I would turn off the porn. Maybe he thought of your husband as “one of the guys”? Maybe? It is just in poor taste, no matter the circumstances of the pop-in. As for the grown daughter, I got incredibly uncomfortable when the Seinfeld episode “The Contest” came on with my 15 year-old in the room. Porn, that is just horrifying to me, even if the daughter was grown.

ragingloli's avatar

@Dutchess_III
well, in that case, I would keep it on, just to see how he reacts.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@ragingloli LOL! Like some sort of psychology test? :D

The guy watches porn while his daughter’s around?

wat

anniereborn's avatar

@Symbeline I agree. That is very odd. I don’t care how old she is. It’s just odd. And I find it creepy.

I’d do both of those things, but i’d probably pull my pants up first

Yep, that is pretty fucking weird!
