Is this a normal case of "food poisoning"?

Asked by Mr_Saturn512 (558points) March 26th, 2015

I never had food poisoning before, I generally have an Iron Stomach, so this is all new to me. I’ll try to be brief:

-Mom and I got food poisoning from dinner. Oddly enough my Dad did not get infected but the other thing is he is taking antibiotics because he had an oral surgery. My assumption is then that it was a bacterial infection.

-Mom got diarrhea and stomach cramps and general malaise. No vomitting at all.

-I vomitted everything I ate from dinner, then got muscle aches and general malaise. No diarrhea.

-I was gradually getting better throughout the day but then I got a fever of 100.5 at night.

-Next morning (today) the fever went from 100.5 to 100.0, then 99, then finally 98.6. Muscle aches went away except for slight headache if I moved too much or got up too quickly.

-However, now that it’s night again, I suddenly felt hot. Guess what? I’m at 100.0 again. My back muscles also hurt – could it be that they’re just sore? I’ve been sitting and lying around a lot. I also feel weird in my throat. It’s not a sore throat but a sort of. . .heaviness? Possibly inflammation?

Is any of this alarming? Throughout my endeavour I’ve been alert. I haven’t been dizzy or coughing. Just vomitted, headaches, muscle aches and a fever. But now that the fever returned at night, I don’t know what to make of it. I don’t feel horrible at all at the moment – in fact I feel the best yet since it started. But it just worried me that the fever came back to exactly 100.0 and also my back muscles ache.

Sounds pretty normal to me.

But just to be safe I would google your location and ask a nurse. Something like “Omaha ask a nurse”. They will listen and see if they think you need to go to the doctor or er.

At least some of your muscle aches could be from all the vomiting.

I had, what I think was some off chicken a few days ago and had stomach cramps and diarrhea within about 90 minutes of eating. No vomiting and after about 30 minutes felt fine again. My friend who ate the same chicken had the same symptoms but still felt funky the next day. They ate more than I did. I don’t think your fever has anything to do with food poisoning, it sounds more like a mild flu to me, but…everyone is different.

I experienced no muscle aches or fever and the whole thing passed pun intended haha quickly.
Fever and muscle aches are more of a virus if you ask me.

@Coloma , Yeah the fever and muscle aches kind of put a hole in my bacterial infection theory but it’s just also weird how my dad didn’t get affected at all and he’s taking antibiotics.

@Mr_Saturn512 It’s a mystery. ?

Muscle aches is either from the toxin or the fever. Sounds normal, but if you get much worse suddenly, like a spike in fever, or some other symptom gets much worse I’d go to the hospital. Also, you should be significantly better within 4 days. If it’s campylobacter I think take the antibiotics for it, there are several that treat it. You said you ate chicken so maybe it’s salmonella. Fever is not unusual with that infection.

Sounds like the antibiotic very well could have caused your dad to be on the lucky side of this. I don’t know what drug he is taking, if it’s Flagyl/metronizadole (commonly prescribed for mouth infections) that would kill off salmonella. I don’t know if it treats ecoli. Probably some of the other mouth infection drugs treat common food poisoning bacterias. Don’t think about just popping one of his pills though. You would need a proper course of treatment.

See a doctor if it doesn’t let up in another day or so. Like I said above campylobacter, a possibility, can drag on for weeks, that’s montezumas revenge, in some people, and the antibiotics are very effective usually. We don’t know what your sick with for sure though obviously.

Did you report it to the restaurant and health department?

Watch for your eyes and skin being yellow and your pee being very dark. That indicates liver damage, possible hep A, but I’m leaning towards the bacterial infection since your dad didn’t get sick.

Worst case I got was from Mahi-Mahi. Vomiting, diarrhea, fever, cramping, entire body aches. Just curled up in a ball and wished I were dead. 30 years later I can still remember how bad it was. Felt like I had been “et by a wolf and shit over a cliff”.

@JLeslie we didn’t get sick from a restaurant, it was from a soup my mom made.

So I’ve been feeling much better today. No more aches and no more returning fever. All feels back to normal EXCEPT for a couple more things I’ve noticed.

One is that it seems to be taking a while for me to FEEL hungry. I take it that’s normal too since my stomach just had a rough time throwing up an entire dinner? I did feel hunger today around lunch but it was light. Like, I know I have to eat but the sensation of hunger is either not there or very light.

Also, I . . er. . .haven’t pooped since Wednesday. Granted, I haven’t eaten much to make excrement. Today I had my first real meal since Tuesday. But since then, all I’ve really eaten is applesauce, cream of rice, rice soup, and simple stuff like that. I tried eating a banana this morning in hopes that I would poop later. That usually happens – when I eat a banana at breakfast I go to the bathroom almost like an hour or so later at work. But it didn’t happen today. That kind of worries me.

Fevers are often higher at night, so that might explain the slight increase. 100 degrees is not too alarming…keep an eye on your temperature, but otherwise, it’s your body fighting the infection. ..not a bad thing!

Hi,really very painful. I think,Food poisoning, also called food-borne illness, is illness caused by eating contaminated food.Food poisoning is a common, yet distressing and sometimes life-threatening problem for millions of people in the U.S. and throughout the world. People infected with food-borne organisms may be symptom-free or may have symptoms ranging from mild intestinal discomfort to severe dehydration and bloody diarrhea. Depending on the type of infection, people can even die as a result of food poisoning.More than 250 different diseases can cause food poisoning. Some of the most common diseases are infections caused by bacteria, such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, E. I think you should take care of your self.

Could have been gastroenteritis or food poisoning. My experience with food poisoning was hell. I went to a wedding and abou 35 of the guest inluding me ended up in hospital. I remember not knowing which end to put over the toilet as both sides were emptying out. General weakness, felt as if I was going to faint and was drained of life. Awful.
