What did you do with all your casual clothes when you started working in an office?

Asked by girassol (552points) March 27th, 2015

If you are required to dress in office-appropriate attire. :)

I’ve been working for several months after graduating, and about 80% of my wardrobe still consists of casual clothes. This seems rather off, since I have to wear the office garb five days a week.

Have you given your unworn casual clothes away? Or do you rabidly wear them whenever you can?

I am about to graduate and I plan on keeping my most favorite casual clothes, to wear on weekends, but I have pared down this portion of my wardrobe significantly. All of my old clothes go to the thrift store.

I only have a handful of casual clothes.

@Mariah that’s great! Thrift stores aren’t common where I live, but I’ll probably pass my clothes to my granny, who likes going around her social circle looking for people who would not mind some extra clothes. :)

My clothes are sophisticated so i didn’t have a problem when i started working in an office… even when i wear jeans (Not to the office obviously) which i love people say i look sophisticated for some reason, guess it’s how you put yourself together, but i have my so called casual clothes but not a lot.

An alternative way to consider this is more “what casual clothes do I regularly wear, what do I not wear anymore?” Get rid of what you don’t wear very often.

But remember that no matter what the level of formality of your work clothes, most people change their clothes when they get home and switch to something more casual. So you still need your casual clothes. If you wear a coat and tie or a suit, you don’t want to wear that while cooking dinner or grocery shopping or hanging out on a recliner watching TV.

I wear them on weekends and any other day I have off of work. Vacation, personal days, etc. I didn’t have a lot to begin with, honestly.

@Safie Ah yes, I get what you mean! I do know some ladies who look sophisticated in the styles of outfits they favour for casual wear, but sadly mine are pretty far from that.

Wore them whenever I could.

I haven’t gotten rid of anything, but I am kind of fading them out, not replacing things. I don’t tend to change when I get home because I don’t want to increase my laundry load, and I’m dressing on the more casual side of business casual anyway. I still wear casual on the weekends but the days of “dressing up” being a choice are over for me.

Another difference is I no longer ask for casual clothes as holiday or birthday gifts. I’d rather flush out my professional attire.
