If most people are "sheeple", how is it that each of us has avoided being one?

Asked by hominid (7357points) April 28th, 2015

Is a feature of being “sheeple” a self-awareness of being one? In other words, do “sheeple” know that they are one of those mindless sheep that are simply following the herd? Or do they think of themselves as having valid reasons for their beliefs and actions?

If each of us cannot be lumped into the term “sheeple”, is this because we were able to self-diagnose ourselves? “Hmm…let me see…Nope! I’m not one of those ‘sheeple’. Good for me!”

Why are we so lucky? What are the features of “sheeple” that we don’t have? Are we not human?

What the flock?

I strike out on my own path, I detest being part of the herd.

Haaaaaa!

Here are some examples of sheepelisms that I do not do:

~ There are three bays at the drive through bank teller. Sheeple all line up, one behind the other, in just one of the bays, while the other two are just sitting there, empty.

~ Sheeples think that because the guy in front of them at the stop sign had room to pull out they have room to pull out too, and don’t even bother looking.

~ Sheeples don’t vaccinate their kids.

~ Sheeples refuse to eat anything that has an ingredient they can’t pronounce in it.

~ Sheeples believe Obama was born in Kenya and is a Muslim.

~Other sheeple stuff.

I used to be a sheeple. I was not aware of my sheeplehood at the time, even though it should have been obvious with the whole “pastor”, “flock”, “sheep vs. goats” nonsense

I guess maybe everyone likes to think that everyone else thinks they’re different. People claim this all the time, but I have personally rarely seen said claims backed up. And people who are black sheep, if you will, usually don’t have to tell other people about it.
And no, I don’t claim to be one myself. Although I do prefer the term “rat”, as in rat race. if that means what I think it does XD

Nope, I’m not a sheeple. Everyone else is, not me.

By that logic, everyone in the entire world is a drug addict or a racist asshole.

Sheeple is just a term used to describe a group of stupid people.

ucme's avatar

It’s another wimpy word used by odious idiots, far better to just say weak fuckers.

Here’s the Monkees’ version of the song.

@cheebdragon: “Sheeple is just a term used to describe a group of stupid people.”

Do sheeple know that they are sheeple?

SQUEEKY2's avatar

^^ @hominid I don’t think most people know that they are indeed sheeple^^

hominid's avatar

@SQUEEKY2: “hominid I don’t think most people know that they are indeed sheeple””

But then how do we know they exist? What is the methodology for determining who is a sheeple and who is not? Do we have data to work with?

cheebdragon's avatar

@ucme Don’t hurt yourself, Aristotle, All words are just words without people to give them meaning. If the word sheeple bothers you so much, maybe you should consider what that says about you. It is after all, just a word.
Unfortunately here on Fluther and throughout most of society, it’s not very polite to call anyone a pretentious douchebag or a fucktard, because that could be seen as a “personal attack”. To prevent an answer from being removed, sheeple is a decent alternative, it’s slightly vague while still remaining politically correct.

I avoided being a sheeple by being a cuntmuffin instead.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@hominid Here is the criteria: You look at a situation and ask yourself, “Why are all those people doing that stupid shit?”

ucme's avatar

@cheebdragon Says the person clearly bothered by a simple point of view on a teeny little site in the corner of the internet…it’s just an opinion

cuntmuffin is good, does exactly what it says on the tin

cheebdragon's avatar

@ucme How am I bothered by it?

ucme's avatar

You felt the need to point it out, quite forcefully too, strange you need reminding of that.

cheebdragon's avatar

@ucme Riight…because why wouldn’t I be bothered with you being bothered by people using a word that has never bothered me in any way~ Sounds legit.

jonsblond's avatar

hey, this cuntmuffin likes popcorn. who da thunk?

ucme's avatar

@cheebdragon That nonsense indicates we’re through here, which is nice.

The McD’s drive through was a classic. There is a specified, painted drive thru LANE, you know. But every so often one car will manage to line up in the middle of the parking lot and virtually everyone who comes in behind them will do the same. No one can drive through the parking lot when that happens.
I pulled in to the actual drive thru lane which meant I was offset from the rest of the world. Oh, the horrors.

We have not avoided being sheeple. Like all others, we think we remember our intelligent moves and quickly disregard the dumb ones.

That’s where I was going with the “circles” the other day – we think we’re in that group of smart people when, in reality, other people will be regarding us as the idiots. It’s why reality TV is so very popular: knowing there’s people less intelligent than oneself is comforting.
