How do you look for a job?

Ask friends or associates if they know someone in business. They don’t have to have a job opening just have a business or they are the hiring manager. Ask the business owner what you should be doing to get a job. DON’T ask them if they have a job.

My first job offer in college was from a face to face interview for a paper in college. It was with the Teamsters and their office at the time wasn’t in the best neighbor. I said, “No thank you.”

Take civil service tests if you are interested in steady work at decent pay with decent benefits.

The best advice that the outplacement consultants had when a bunch of us were laid off from a high-tech firm was contacts. They talked about every kind of approach to job seeking and ended by saying that the majority of jobs are found through personal connections. (I believe that’s why LinkedIn.com was started, although it’s lost sight of its networking function by now.) You don’t want to pester people, but most people won’t mind if you ask whether their workplace is hiring. They can give you names, numbers, and advice.

This doesn’t just apply to professional jobs. It can get you in at a pizza place too. And some job is better than no job. Remember, there’s no shame in honest work.

What kind of job? If it’s at a restaurant or something like that, the best thing to do is walk in during a time where it’s slow and the manager is around.
